NSU Offense Explodes in Doubleheader Sweep of N.C. A&T

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. – Led by senior Gipsy Ramirez, the Norfolk State softball team exploded for 36 hits in a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina A&T on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Aggies 16-2, 16-8, at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.

Ramirez went 6-for-8 with six runs and nine RBI and had two of NSU's 12 extra-base hits on the day, including a two-run home run in a seven-run sixth inning in Game 1. The Spartans scored at least five runs in four different innings to break a seven-game losing streak.

All but one starter had at least two hits in the first game for NSU (6-12), while sophomore Liz Riley (1-3) pitched all six innings and gave up just two earned runs on six hits. Sophomore Alina Moriarty drove in three runs in each game and hit a combined 5-for-8, while junior Morgan Boyd scored three runs in both games as well.

Moriarty got NSU on the board in the top of the first in Game 1 with a two-out, two-run double. A single by Ramirez and a double off the bat of senior Chelsea Davis scored two more in the third, and then NSU plated five in the fourth.

A bases loaded walk and an RBI single to center by Davis scored the first two. Moriarty hit a sacrifice fly, and RBI singles by junior Kathy Cortez and freshman Whitney Williams plated the last two runs of the inning.

NSU then put seven-spot on the board in the sixth. Junior Melina Valles doubled to left field and Cortez singled home pinch runner Shekinah Stewart for the first two runs. Sophomore Haley Ward hit a two-run triple, her second three-bagger of the game, and scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Heather Dunning. After Boyd walked, Ramirez launched her two-run homer to center field for the final scoring of Game 1.

It was much the same in the second game, as the Spartans quickly pushed two runs across the plate, this time on a double from Ramirez. Five more came across in the second, the first two on an RBI groundout and an error on the Aggies. Ramirez hit an RBI single, and Davis followed with a triple to right center. Moriarty's single up the middle then brought home Davis.

NSU made it 9-1 in the top of the third when Dunning hit another RBI groundout and a second run scored on an error on A&T. The Aggies scored two runs in the bottom half of the third and then two more in the fifth to make it 10-5 in favor of the Spartans.

Dunning hit yet another RBI groundout in the fifth, and then NSU added six more in the seventh inning. The Spartans quickly loaded the bases, and Ramirez followed with a two-run single to center. Davis followed with an RBI double, and Moriarty scored two more on a double to center. One more error on A&T scored the last run of the frame. The Aggies added three runs in the bottom of the seventh, including two runs thanks to a two-run single by Amari McNeil.

Cortez went 3-for-4 in the second game with a pair of runs, while Davis hit 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.  Davis also finished the day 5-for-8. Dunning had three RBI, while Ward scored three runs as well in the second game. Junior Jamie Schulle (5-8) picked up the win after pitching four innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits.

Sabrina Edmonds and Raven Smith each hit homers for A&T (1-16) in the second game. Smith also finished 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

NSU will compete in the Delaware Spring Invitational this weekend beginning with a pair of games on Friday against Hartford at 11:15 a.m. and host Delaware at 3:15 p.m.
