Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Delaware State scored five runs in the 11th inning to complete a sweep of the Norfolk State baseball team Saturday afternoon at
Marty L. Miller Field. After scoring two runs in the eighth in the first game to win 9-7, the Hornets won Game 2 by an 8-3 margin after the Spartans had forced extra innings by rallying in the seventh.
Delaware State hit a pair of RBI singles in the eighth inning in Game 1 to take the lead for good while also shutting down NSU over the last five innings. In Game 2, NSU was the one that pitched well late, keeping the Hornets scoreless for five innings until things fell apart in the 11th.
NSU (5-12, 0-2 MEAC) pushed the game into extra innings in the second game with a single run in the seventh. Junior
Tyon Ore singled into left field to open the frame, and a sacrifice bunt and a single by freshman
Kyle Vaas put runners on the corners. Catcher
Robert Reaume then hit a bunt down the first base line, and Ore took off for home when pitcher Matt McClain turned to throw to first.
The Spartans had a chance to win it in the ninth, but sophomore
Justin Lee hit into a double play with the bases loaded to end the threat. The Hornets left a runner on third in the 10th inning and then finally broke through in the 11th.
After Cameron Onderko singled with one out, NSU threw the ball away on a grounder to third to allow Onderko to score. Aaron Nardone hit an infield single with the bases loaded to score another, and Eddie Sorondo doubled home two more before Mitchell Moore's sacrifice fly closed the scoring.
The Spartans actually scored first in Game 2 with two runs in the third. Vaas lined one to short for an infield single and then moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Reaume lofted a double down the right field line to score Vaas, and sophomore
Mikey Bruno hit a sac fly later in the inning.
Ryan Haas hit an RBI single in the fourth for DSU (11-6, 2-0), and the Hornets added two more in the fifth on a Cameron Cecil sac fly and an infield throwing error on the Spartans.
McClain pitched seven innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits for DSU. Derek Marshallsea (2-2) earned the win after allowing two hits in three scoreless innings.
On the other side, senior
Richie Salter got the no-decision after striking out six and giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits in six innings. Sophomore
Troy Applin pitched well in relief, striking out three in three scoreless innings of work.
Vaas hit 3-for-3 in the contest.
In the first game, Delaware State took a 5-0 lead after an inning and a half, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by Nardone in the first that just landed in fair territory.
The Spartans answered with two in the second, as Reaume hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and Ore also scored on the play when the throw to third got away from Onderko. Junior
Chase Kyriacou hit an RBI single in the third, and after Cecil's double to center in the fourth plated another run for DSU, the Spartans took a 7-6 lead in the fourth.
Following a single by junior
Cody Ellis and a walk to Vaas, Reaume lined one into left-center to score the first of four runs in the inning. Lee placed a perfect bunt single toward the second baseman to load the bases, and one out later Kyriacou hit one past the third base bag to bring home two. Junior
Cameron Day singled home another run, and NSU nearly added to its lead, but Kyriacou was thrown out at home on a hit by junior
Zach Markel to end the inning.
A throwing error on NSU scored a run for the Hornets in the sixth to tie the score at 7-7, and DSU plated two more in the eighth on RBI singles by Cecil and Haas.
The Spartans tagged DSU starter Jordan Elliott, who had come into the game with a 0.43 ERA in 21 innings. Elliott allowed seven runs, five earned, on nine hits in four innings.
George Michael (2-0), though, earned the win after giving up just one hit with five strikeouts in five innings of relief.
Kyriacou hit 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Reaume knocked in a pair of runs in Game 1.
The two teams will finish out the series Saturday with a single game at noon.
