CHESAPEAKE, Va.
– The Norfolk State bowling team sits in fifth place after the first day of the MEAC Championship on Friday at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake.

The Spartans, who won the Southern Division regular season crown this year, struggled with their scores in team play on Friday despite finishing with a 3-2 record. Only UMES (5-0) and Delaware State (4-1) held a better record than the Spartans at the end of the first day of competition.

NSU finished with a total pin fall of 4,402, just behind North Carolina A&T, which had 4,417. Eight teams comprise the field at the championship.

Sophomore Carrie Hickey averaged a 195.8 in all five games to lead the Spartans, while junior Thea Aspiras tallied a 188.6 average in five games.

Redshirt senior Sheila-Marie Smith posted a 181.0 average in four games. Sophomores Kelsea Yarbrough and Delilah Bethel each bowled four games, while senior Jessica Overton bowled in the other three games.

As the No. 5 seed heading into the double elimination bracket round on Saturday, NSU will take on No. 4 A&T. Play gets underway at 8:30 a.m. in Baker play. The MEAC semifinal and championship match are set for Sunday.
