FLORENCE, S.C. –The Norfolk State men's tennis team posted a 5-1 win over Benedict on Tuesday afternoon.
NSU improved to 6-6 overall while Benedict fell to 2-6 on the season.
The Spartans started off strong in the doubles competition. Robin Riethmueller and Igor Braga claimed an 8-1 victory over Zibusiso Ndimande and Shane Latchman in match No.1. Daniel Grauel and Samuel Lemberger competed in the No. 2 position, where they posted an 8-0 win against Darreus Wheeler and Giovanni Plater. The Spartans won the third doubles match by default because Benedict did not have enough players.
In the singles competition, Riethmueller upended competed at the No. 2 spot and defeated Latchman, 6-1, 6-2. Ramstromer-Pello won against Wheeler, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 3 singles match. In match No. 4, Lemberger claimed a 6-1, 6-4, win over Plater. Grauel played Timothy Thornton in match No. 5, beating Thornton, 6-0, 6-0. NSU's only loss came in the No. 1 singles match. Braga fell to Ndimande, 7-5, 6-4.
NSU will take a two-week break before returning to the courts to face Virginia Union on March 20 in Norfolk, Va. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
