Savannah State Uses 8-Run 4th to Complete DH Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete a wild ending to Game 1 and then put an eight-spot on the scoreboard in the fourth inning of Game 2 to finish a doubleheader sweep of the Norfolk State softball team on Wednesday afternoon at Lady Tiger Field.

The teams scored a combined nine runs in the last two innings of the first game, which ended when Michaela Patton singled with two outs to score the winning run for the Tigers (12-8). Savannah State scored eight runs in the fourth inning of Game 2 to erase what had been a three-run lead for NSU (4-8).

Each team had 21 hits on a windy afternoon, and Patton did plenty of damage for the Tigers, going a combined 5-for-6 with five runs and five RBI. Senior Gipsy Ramirez and freshman Heather Dunning each had two hits in the first game for NSU with five RBI between the two. Senior Chelsea Davis went 3-for-4 with two RBI thanks to a two-run home run in the second game.

Savannah State jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first game after Tiffany Taylor hit a two-run double in the bottom of the third. Dunning hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth, and then NSU put three more on the board in the sixth for a 5-4 lead. An infield single by Dunning scored the first run, and then with the bases loaded and two outs, Ramirez lined one back up the middle to plate two more.

Patton doubled and Amber Hallman hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-5 Savannah State lead. Junior Kathy Cortez doubled to lead off the seventh to start another rally for NSU. Sophomore Liz Riley singled to bring home Cortez, and then Dunning reached on an error by the left fielder to score pinch runner Shekinah Stewart.

After the Spartans left runners in scoring position, though, the Tigers rallied for one last time in the seventh. Savannah State was down to its last out with a runner on first, before a single by Imani Gayle and an error on NSU plated the first run. An infield hit moved Gayle to third before Patton hit one to right to bring home the winning run.

Madison Hedderly picked up the win after allowing seven runs, four earned, on 12 hits with nine strikeouts in all seven innings. Hedderly (9-4) also got the win in the second game in relief.

Ramirez hit an RBI double in the top of the first and then another error on the Tiger outfield scored Ramirez to give the Spartans an early 2-0 lead in Game 2. India Morgan then singled in two runs in the bottom half of the frame as Savannah State scored three in the inning.

NSU made it 6-3 with four runs in the third. Sophomore Robyn Mitchell hit an RBI single, and Davis followed with a two-run home run to left center. Sophomore Haley Ward doubled in the next at bat and Dunning followed with a single to bring her home.

Savannah State got one back in the third, and Cortez hit a fielder's choice RBI in the fourth for a 7-4 Spartan lead. The Tigers, though, scored eight in the bottom half of the frame for the day's final scoring. Patton's three-run double highlighted the inning and was one of six RBI hits in the fourth.

Ramirez had two hits in Game 2 and finished 4-for-8 on the afternoon. Cortez drove in two runs in the second game.

NSU will head to Campbell to take part in the Camel Stampede Invitational Friday and Saturday.
