Quinn, Eagles Stifle NSU Baseball 6-1

Box Score

DURHAM, N.C. – Jordan Quinn scattered three hits over seven innings of work and yielded just one run to lead host North Carolina Central to a 6-1 win over Norfolk State on Thursday evening at the Durham Athletic Park.

Quinn walked four and struck out two for the Eagles, who improved to 8-5. NSU dropped to 3-8.

Dylan Drayton had three hits and three RBI for NCCU. He plated the Eagles first run in the bottom of the first, doubling in Akeem Hood, who led off the game with a double of his own. Tyson Simpson added a two-run single later in the frame off NSU starter Jeff Di Fulgo (0-2), giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

That proved to be more than enough for Quinn (3-0), but NCCU padded its lead on Drayton's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth.

The Spartans scored their lone run in the eighth. Tyon Ore led off with a single and went to third on another single by Kyle Vaas. Chase Kyriacou followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Ore to bring the Spartans within 5-1.

But that would be all NSU could muster off Eagle pitching. NCCU added one more run in the eighth when Zach Lee scored on a wild pitch.

Jacob Russell pitched the final two innings for the Eagles, retiring all six batters he faced.

NCCU out-hit the Spartans 12-3. Drayton went 3-for-5, while Simpson, Lee and Spencer Franceschetti each went 2-for-4.

Vaas, making the start at designated hitter, went 2-for-3 for NSU. It was the first two-hit game of the freshman's career. Ore had the only other NSU hit.

Di Fulgo took the loss, allowing three hits and three runs in two innings pitched.

The Spartans return home to host Wagner College in a three-game series starting with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Marty L. Miller Field.
