Box Score 2 BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Norfolk State softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday evening during the first day of the Camel Stampede Invitational at Campbell's Amanda Littlejohn Stadium, falling to host Campbell by a 6-2 score and then wrapping up the day with a 5-3 loss to Drexel.
NSU left a total of 21 runners on base over the two games, dropping to 4-10 on the season. Five of the 11 runs the Spartans gave up were unearned.
The Spartans faced host Campbell in an early evening contest, and after freshman
Whitney Williams singled to lead off the fourth,
Chelsea Davis hit her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center. NSU's only scoring of the game cut the Camels' lead to 3-2 after they had scored three in the third on an RBI double from Brittany Bruce and a two-run homer off the bat of Stephanie Jones.
After Davis plated two, Campbell (11-7) scored two more in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of RBI singles and then one more run in the sixth.
Ericka Nesbitt went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead the Camels. Freshman
Heather Dunning had two of NSU's eight hits in the game.
Julia Callicutt (3-1) earned the win, giving up two earned runs while scattering eight hits in six innings of work.
NSU faced Drexel in the next and last game of the day, and the Dragons scored a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly for the early lead. They added two more in the fourth on a Jenn Reading home run to lead off the inning and an RBI infield single.
The Spartans plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior
Gipsy Ramirez singled with one out and sophomore
Robyn Mitchell followed with a pinch-hit double to score Ramirez. Williams, who missed the last six games because of a concussion, singled up the middle to bring home Mitchell.
The Dragons (6-11) made it 5-2 in the sixth when Jill Popek hit an RBI single and another run scored on a Spartan error on the same play. The Spartans wasted prime opportunities to cut into the deficit when they left the bases loaded in both the sixth and the seventh innings, scoring just one run on an error with two outs in the seventh for the final scoring margin.
Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Reading hit 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Dragons.
Tara Konopka (3-6) gave up three runs, one earned, on eight hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game for Drexel. Junior
Jamie Schulle (4-7) suffered the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on four strikeouts in seven innings.
The Spartans will take on Northern Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. and Morehead State at 8 on Saturday during the second day of the tournament.
