NORFOLK, Va. – Chase Kyriacou's walk-off RBI double gave Norfolk State a 2-1 victory in the opener, but Wagner held off the Spartans for a 4-3 win in game two as the Spartans and Seahawks split a doubleheader at Marty L. Miller Field on Saturday afternoon.
NSU is now 4-9 on the year, while Wagner is 2-7.
Kyriacou lined a one-out double down the right-field line to score pinch runner Andre Moore from second with the winning run in the day's opening game. Kyle Vaas drew a lead-off walk before being lifted for Moore.
Troy Applin pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to pick up his first win of the season. Anthony Battaglia (1-1) took the loss for Wagner, allowing the winning run in one-third of an inning's worth of work.
Chris Horne took a no-decision for NSU despite pitching his best game of the year. He went eight innings, allowing just one run and three hits. Horne walked none, hit two and struck out five. After yielding a run on two hits in the first, Horne did not allow another hit until his eighth and final frame.
Wagner took a 1-0 lead with some small ball in the top of the first. Ian Smith led off with an infield single and promptly stole second and third bases. He scored the game's first run when Jayson Keel blooped a double over the heads off NSU's drawn-in infield.
The Spartans had their first six batters retired by Wagner starter Ryan Casey, but finally got to the right hander in the fourth. Cody Ellis led off with a double down the left-field line. After Ellis moved to third on a Cameron Day sacrifice, Zach Markel followed with a double down the right-field line to score Ellis.
Casey also took a no-decision for Wagner, giving up eight hits and striking out two in eight innings pitched.
Justin Lee and Tyon Ore each had two of NSU's nine hits in the first game.
In game two, the Seahawks took the early lead with two runs in the top of the third. Nick Dini lined up an RBI double down the third-base line to get things started. After advancing to third on a Chris Smith single, Dini scored on a squeeze bunt by Tommy Mazurkiewicz.
NSU cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth without scoring a run. Day and Markel walked to lead off the inning. A sacrifice by Ore moved both runners up one base, and Kyriacou's sacrifice fly scored Day to make it 2-1.
Wagner took advantage of an infield RBI single by Dini and a two-out NSU error to stretch its lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh. The Seahawks would need the insurance, as NSU mounted a rally in the bottom of seventh. Robert Reaume got things started with a two-out, none-on single. Lee followed with a single of his own, and the ball skipped by Wagner outfielder Trey Nicosia, allowing Reaume to score and Lee to reach third. Mikey Bruno followed with an RBI single up the middle to chase Wagner starter Paul Mammino from the game.
In came Wagner reliever Steven Bloodworth, and he retired Ellis on the first pitch he threw to clinch the win.
Mammino got the win, allowing five hits and three runs, one earned, in 6.2 innings of work. Bloodworth earned his first save of the year.
Richie Salter (2-2) was the hard-luck loser for the Spartans. He allowed just four hits and two innings in six innings of work. He walked three and struck out six.
Bruno had a season-high three hits, going 3-for-4 for NSU. Dini was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Seahawks.
