Season-Bests, PRs and Nkrumah's School Record Highlights for Spartan Men at NSU Relays

Meet Results

NORFOLK, Va. – Season-best marks and personal records fell by the handful, including one school record, during the 2013 NSU Relays collegiate track and field meet on Saturday at Dick Price Stadium.

Perfect weather conditions and a home-track advantage helped the Spartans post a slew of standout performances. Leading the way was a trio of Spartan recognized during Senior Day festivities during the meet: hurdler Keith Nkrumah, sprinter James Taylor and sprinter/hurdler Kenneth Smith.

In his first meet running the 110-meter hurdles this year, Nkrumah broke former teammate Aramis Massenburg's school record. Nkrumah clocked a time of 13.60 seconds, .03 faster than Massenburg's record set in 2011. Nkrumah took second in the event, just being edged out at the finish line by St. Augustine's Moussa Dembele (13.59). The 13.60 time would rank him fourth in the NCAA East Preliminary rankings based on times heading into this weekend.

Taylor swept firsts in both the 200 and 400 meters. Taylor clocked a 20.78 in the 200m to win comfortably. Running the 400m for the first time outdoors since high school, Taylor posted a 46.55 to take the 400. Taylor – who is a senior academically but will return next season since he has remaining eligibility – was one of seven NSU men honored during Senior Day.

Smith posted two PRs Saturday, in the 100 meters and 400 hurdles. He placed second in both events, running a 10.49 in the 100m and 52.87 in the 400 hurdles.

Spartan runners also posted wins in the 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m and 4x400 relay. Damtew Adnew took gold in the steeplechase in 9 minutes, 55.60 seconds. Nathnael Meseret claimed the title in the 5,000m in a time of 15:11.20. The 4x400 team of De'Von Booker, Steve Coles, Quentin Parker and Andre Pickett took first place in 3:21.40.

The Spartans were also strong in field events on Saturday. Freshman Johnathan Anderson won the shot put with a season-best attempt of 46-3.25. Classmate Jamarian Bates also posted a season-best with his mark of 23-7.25 in the long jump, which placed him third overall but first among collegiate athletes.

Willard Ward, yet another of NSU's talented freshmen, won the pole vault with a season-best height of 13-6.25. Terrion Smith claimed second in the triple jump (season-best 46-10) and Ian Copeland was runner-up in the discus (146-2).

The Spartans are back in action next weekend at the Morgan State Legacy Meet in Baltimore, Md.
