The wins moved NSU to above .500 for the first time this year at 20-18 overall. North Carolina Central fell to 3-35 after the Spartans scored five runs in the seventh in Game 2 to break open a tight game.
Moriarty and sophomore
Haley Ward opened up the top of the fourth of the first game with back-to-back singles. Both players scored when Jones hit into a fielder's choice and an error on shortstop Angelique Perricelli extended the play. Junior
Melina Valles hit an RBI single later in the inning to make it 3-0.
Senior
Gipsy Ramirez and junior
Kathy Cortez hit RBI singles in the fifth to give NSU a 5-0 lead, and Moriarty belted a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 7-0. Jones opened up the seventh with a solo homer to left field to complete the scoring in the first game.
Cortez hit 3-for-4 in the contest and then went 2-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs in the second game. Freshman
Whitney Williams had four of NSU's 17 hits in the nightcap.
The Eagles scored first with three runs on four straight singles in the second inning. The Spartans immediately tied things up with three in the top of the third. Moriarty reached on an error and Ward singled before Ramirez singled in the first run. With two outs and runners in scoring position, Cortez lined one into center to score two more.
After Williams doubled in the fourth, junior
Morgan Boyd singled into left to make it 4-3 in favor of NSU. The Spartans, though, left the bases loaded and were still in a tight game until scoring five in the seventh.
Cortez singled and went to third when Valles reached on an error. Williams singled into right center and freshman
Heather Dunning doubled to score a second run. Moriarty singled in Dunning, and Ward followed with a two-run shot over the right field fence for a 9-3 lead.
The Eagles hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh for the final scoring margin.
Sophomore
Liz Riley (6-7) earned the win in relief, giving up one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Moriarty hit 3-for-4 in Game 2, while Boyd, Ramirez and Ward each had a pair of hits as well.
