RALEIGH, N.C. –The Norfolk State men's tennis team posted a 4-0 win over Hampton in the quarterfinals of the 2013 MEAC Tennis Championship on Friday afternoon at the Millbrook Tennis Center.
The Spartans will take on top-seeded Florida A&M on Saturday at noon in the semifinals of the 2013 MEAC Championships. This is the third straight year that the Spartans have advanced to the semifinals.
The Spartans, seeded third in the MEAC southern division, improved to 13-8 overall while Hampton, seeded second in the northern division, finished the season with a 5-10 record.
In the doubles matches, Dzmitry Zyhmantovich and Peter Ramstromer-Pello teamed up to defeat Park Wan-Young and Henry Drakeford, 8-0. In match No. 2, Igor Braga and Robin Riethmueller posted an 8-3 victory over Kenneth Greene and Lakshmana Satchithananthan. Match No. 3 was abandoned after the Spartans clinched the doubles point. Samuel Lemberger and Daniel Grauel were scheduled to compete against Joshua McQueen and Alvin Fludd.
The Spartans continued to shine in the singles competition. Zyhmantovich, who was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year, defeated Fludd, 6-1, 6-2 in match No.1. In match No. 2, Riethmueller was up 6-1, 5-2 against Wan-Young. The match was retired because Wan-Young was injured. Ramstromer-Pello finished things off for NSU with a 6-0, 6-0 win over McQueen in match No. 4.
