Horne Tosses 2nd Straight Shutout in 6-0 Win over Coppin State

Box Score

NORFOLK, Va.Chris Horne tossed his second straight shutout, scattering seven hits while striking out a career-high nine hitters to lead Norfolk State to a 6-0 win over Coppin State on Saturday at Marty L. Miller Field.

Horne walked just one in his second straight complete-game performance. He pitched a two-hitter and fanned seven to help the Spartans (14-20, 9-7 MEAC) beat UMES one week ago.

Horne got all the help he needed in the first two innings. Cameron Day got things started with a two-out, RBI infield single in the bottom of the first. NSU then took advantage of some wildness from Eagles' starter Myles Taylor (2-6) to plate four runs in the second. Taylor walked Tyon Ore to lead off the inning, but promptly picked him off first. But Taylor was still not out of the woods. With two outs, Ryan Montgomery doubled to the wall in left. Taylor then walked Robert Reaume, Justin Lee and Chase Kyriacou in succession to score Montgomery. Zach Markel followed with a bases-clearing, three-run double to give NSU a 5-0 lead.

That was all Horne (4-2) would need. He scattered six singles and one double in his second straight masterful performance. Horne has now thrown 18 straight scoreless innings.

The Spartans capped the scoring in the fifth. Day led off with a walk, stole second base and went to third on a groundout. Ore then flew out to the track in left to score Day with NSU's sixth run.

Seven different Spartans accounted for their seven hits. Lee scored a pair of runs, while Markel had three RBI.

Dalton Cozart went 2-for-4 to lead the Eagles (11-24, 6-10). Taylor took the loss, allowing six hits and five runs with five walks in 3.2 innings.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon.
