Riley Pitches NSU to Sweep of Delaware State, 6-0

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore starter Liz Riley scattered eight hits over seven innings to lead the Norfolk State softball team to a 6-0 victory and a series sweep of Delaware State on Sunday at the NSU Softball Field.

Combined with NSU's victories over the Hornets on Saturday, 4-3 and 9-1, the Spartans improved to 14-1 in the MEAC Northern Division and 23-18 overall. NSU, which maintained its first-place standing in the North, is now guaranteed to finish either first or second in the division.

After earning the win in the last home game of the season, the Spartans set a program record for the most MEAC wins in a season, breaking the previous best of 13 victories set in 2007.

After giving up just one run in the second game of Saturday's contest, Riley (8-7) did even better, pitching her second shutout of the year while working out of several jams. She got plenty of offensive help, as the Spartans scored five runs in the first two innings.

Sophomore Alina Moriarty hit 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, including her seventh homer of the season in the first, a solo shot over the left-center field wall.

Rachel Meagley (3-12) suffered the loss for Delaware State (15-28, 7-5), giving up five earned runs on eight hits in just two innings of work.

Moriarty gave NSU a 1-0 lead after one full inning, and the Spartans added four more in the second. Junior Melina Valles slid just under the tag at second for a leadoff double, and freshman Heather Dunning lined a double toward the left field corner to make it 2-0. With the infield drawn in, junior Morgan Boyd hit one past third baseman Rochelle Sablay to put runners on the corners.

Boyd took off for second, and the short throw to the charging second baseman instead skipped into the outfield, allowing Dunning to come home. Moriarty hit a one-hopper into left field to score Boyd, and sophomore Haley Ward doubled over the center fielder's head for a 5-0 lead.

Boyd crossed the plate in the fourth on a Delaware State infield error to complete the day's scoring.

The Hornets left 10 batters on base. Riley worked out of jams in both the second and third innings when DSU had runners in scoring position. The Hornets had runners on the corners in the sixth but Riley again escaped without giving up a run.

Dunning and freshman Whitney Williams each added two hits on the day.

NSU will play its last non-conference games of the year on Wednesday with a doubleheader at George Mason before finishing out the regular season May 4-5 at Hampton.
