Box Score 2 FAIRFAX, Va. – Junior
Jamie Schulle pitched a complete game shutout in the first contest, and the Norfolk State softball team rallied in the second to win a pair of games over George Mason on Wednesday afternoon at the George Mason Softball Complex.
Schulle shut down the Patriot offense in a 2-0 victory in Game 1, and NSU scored a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings of the second game to come away with a 4-3 win. The victories ran NSU's win streak to 10 and improved its overall record to 25-18.
The Spartans are guaranteed to finish with an overall winning record this year, just the second time ever in the Division I era NSU will end the season with a winning overall mark. The only other time NSU did so was in 2007, when the Spartans finished 26-25 and set the D-I record for most wins in a season.
Schulle scattered six hits in seven innings in the first game to improve her overall record to 15-10. Sophomore
Liz Riley (9-7) had to work around eight hits and four walks in the second game, allowing three runs, one earned, in a complete game effort.
The Spartans took an early lead over George Mason (15-34) in the top of the first of the first game, as junior
Morgan Boyd hit a bunt single and sophomore
Alina Moriarty drove a double into right center field to make it 1-0.
The teams combined to leave 11 runners on base over the first three innings, and NSU was unable to capitalize on several good scoring opportunities in the early going. Schulle made sure that early one-run lead stuck, working out of some jams in those first few innings.
NSU tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning. A pair of walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Spartans with no outs, and Moriarty lofted a sacrifice fly to center field with one out to score junior
Nikki Jones. The Patriots put a runner on second with no outs in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to end the shutout.
Sarah Kleinfelter suffered the loss for George Mason in the first game, giving up two earned runs on seven hits in five innings of work.
Boyd and sophomore
Haley Ward each had two hits in the first game, and Ward went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the second contest.
The Patriots scored first in the second game with a pair of runs in the second inning. A single and an infield error put runners on the corners with one out, and back-to-back walks issued by Riley gave GMU a 1-0 lead. Riley hit the next batter to plate another run before getting out of the inning on a fielder's choice.
Three straight singles in the bottom of the third inning loaded the bases again for George Mason. After Kaitlyn Griffith hit a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead, Riley retired the next two batters to again escape any further damage.
The Spartans cut the deficit to 3-2 with two runs in the fourth. Freshman
Whitney Williams singled with one out, and Ward doubled to left center to plate Williams. Ward advanced to third before scoring on an RBI single from junior
Melina Valles.
NSU took the lead for good with two more runs in the fifth. Freshman
Heather Dunning singled and scored on a pinch-hit double from sophomore
Robyn Mitchell. After Boyd re-entered the game for Mitchell, Moriarty drove her home with a hit to second.
The Patriots made a last stand in the seventh, as a walk and an error on NSU on a fielder's choice put runners on first and second with one out. Tori Rodriguez singled into left, but Dunning threw out the runner going to second and Riley got the last batter to pop up to end the game.
The Patriots left 10 runners on base in the second game.
NSU will have more than a week off before facing Hampton on the road May 4-5 in the last regular season games of the year.
