Lee Leads Offensive Onslaught in 14-6 Win over DSU

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore shortstop Justin Lee had a career-high four of Norfolk State's 17 hits Sunday, propelling the Spartans to a 14-6 win over Delaware State in the teams' series finale at Marty L. Miller Field.

Freshman catcher Robert Reaume added a career-high three hits for the Spartans (16-24, 11-10 MEAC), who scored six runs in the fourth inning to break the game open. Eight of NSU's nine starters in the batting order had at least one hit, and six had at least two hits.

Lee helped NSU get on the board early, leading off the bottom of the first with a single off DSU (29-13, 18-3) starter Elliott Gardner and later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Cody Ellis.

DSU tied the game at 1-all in the second on Eddie Sorondo's RBI double. But NSU exploded for six runs in the fourth to take a commanding lead. Lee and Tyon Ore each knocked in a run with a single, and Zach Markel added a two-run single over a drawn-in infield to highlight the frame.

Ryan Haas drove in a run for the Hornets with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but the Spartan offense kept coming. Starting with the fourth-inning uprising, the Spartans scored in their final six innings at bat. Freshman center fielder Andre Moore notched his first career extra-base hit with an RBI triple in the fifth. Cameron Day drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the sixth, and Lee added another run-scoring single in the seventh.

The Hornets kept it interesting by scoring three times in the top of the eighth. Aaron Nardone homered to right field to start the rally. Cameron Onderko and Cameron Cecil both drove in runs with sacrifice fly balls, cutting NSU's lead to 10-6.

But the Spartans finished strong with a four-run eighth. Markel led off with a single and scored on Day's long double to the gap in left-center field. Two batters later, freshman Kyle Vaas just missed a homer with a long double to the base of the wall in right, which scored Day easily. Moore capped the rally by beating out a grounder at first for an RBI single, and a DSU throwing error allowed a second run to score on Moore's hit.

Troy Applin (2-3) earned the win for the Spartans, pitching three innings in relief and allowing four runs, three earned. He came on in relief of freshman right hander Cooper Jones, who made perhaps his best start of the season. He allowed four hits and one run in four innings, but left before going the requisite five frames to pick up the win.

Raymond Morton finished off DSU with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

NSU fell just one run and one hit shy of tying its season highs in both categories. The Spartans scored 15 runs on March 3 against Fairleigh Dickinson and pounded a season-best 18 hits on March 24 vs. UMES.

Lee finished 4-for-6 with a pair of runs and two RBI. Reaume went 3-for-5 and also scored twice. Day finished 2-for-5 with three RBI, and Markel went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Ore and Moore both went 2-for-5, with Moore tallying his first career multi-hit game.

For the Hornets, Gardner (5-1) took his first loss of the season. He gave up seven hits and seven runs, four of them earned, in four innings of work.

Sorondo went 3-for-5 and Cecil was 2-for-4 for DSU.

The Spartans step outside of conference play when they host CIAA champion Winston-Salem State at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
