Coppin Takes 2 from Spartan Baseball, Ties for 2nd in MEAC North

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State's pitching trio of Shane Davies, Michael Roberts and Will Grebenstein combined to limit Norfolk State to two runs and 11 combined hits as the Eagles swept Saturday's doubleheader from the Spartans by scores of 4-1 and 3-1 at Joe Cannon Stadium.

With the doubleheader sweep, CSU (16-29, 11-12) tied NSU (16-26, 11-12) for second place in the MEAC's Northern Division. The teams conclude their conference regular-season games with a single contest at noon Sunday, with the winner earning the No. 2 seed from the division in this month's MEAC Baseball Tournament.

In game 1, the Eagles outhit NSU 12-6 and turned three double plays in support of Davies (4-6). He worked around six walks by allowing just five hits and one run in 7.1 innings of work. Roberts finished off the Spartans with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

CSU scored all its runs in the first and seventh innings. In the first, Jack Kraft hit an RBI single and Alex Brown an RBI double, both with two outs, to give CSU an early 2-0 lead.

Neither team broke through again until the seventh. Again, all the damage was done with two outs, as Dalton Cozart and Daniel Hamlett hit run-scoring singles after the Spartans recorded two outs.

That was enough for Davies and Roberts, as NSU could only muster one run. That came in the top of the eighth, as Zach Markel walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Cameron Day's RBI single. But Roberts recorded outs on the next two at-bats in the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth to finish off the win.

Chris Horne (4-4) took the loss for NSU despite pitching his third complete game of the season. He gave up 12 hits and four runs in eight innings. Horne walked one and struck out six.

Chris Kashangaki led CSU with a 3-for-4 effort and two stolen bases in the opener. Cozart, Hamlett, Brown and Kraft added two hits apiece.

In game 2, Grebenstein pitched a seven-inning complete game. He allowed just five hits and one run, walked none and fanned five. The Eagles' offense, meanwhile, got off to a fast early start and NSU could not recover. Cozart walked and scored on Kraft's two-out RBI double off NSU starter Justin Bhatti.

In the second, Brown led off by walking, moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored on Jay Maletz's single to give CSU a 2-0 lead.

CSU tacked on a run in the fourth when Kashangaki walked with the bases loaded, making it 3-1.

The Spartans got their only run in the sixth. Justin Lee and Killian Strenn hit back-to-back lead-off singles off Grebenstein. Lee later scored from third on a wild pitch.

Lee and Strenn both went 2-for-2 in the nightcap, but the rest of the Spartan lineup managed just one hit.

Bhatti (2-7) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in two innings. He walked three hitters.

Strenn finished the day 3-for-5 in the two games, and Lee was 3-for-7. Cozart, Kraft and Brown had three hits apiece for CSU.
