Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State volleyball team got a measure of revenge and capped off the Spartan Classic with another solid performance, defeating UMES 3-0 Saturday night at Joseph Echols Hall.
A day after taking care of former MEAC Southern Division foe Bethune-Cookman, the Spartans handled the Hawks, the defending MEAC champions, 25-15, 25-17, 25-18.
It was a big match for the Spartans, who were looking to take down UMES after the Hawks knocked off NSU in a five-set thriller a year ago. That loss in Norfolk eventually prevented Norfolk State from winning a share of the MEAC Northern Division title.
The Spartans won on Saturday thanks to another solid hitting performance. NSU (4-6) hit a season-best .280, and for the second night in a row different players stepped up on the offensive side of the ball. Senior
Goda Jankauskaite added 11 kills on just 15 swings and hit .667 for the match, the best hitting percentage by a Spartan player with at least 10 kills in the last four years.
Jankauskaite was one of seven players to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. She joined teammate
Jessica Johnson, Delicia Pierre of Bethune-Cookman, Petra Jerabkova and Haley Robinson of UMES and Taylor Cannon and Amanda Videmsek of Charlotte. Videmsek just edged out her teammate for MVP honors.
Like the match against the Wildcats on Friday, NSU's offense really got going late in the early sets. The Spartans used an 11-1 run near the end of the first set, with sophomore
Janay Frazier providing three kills during the closing stretch to help NSU pull away.
Frazier had seven kills in the match, with five of those coming in the first set alone.
UMES (1-8) had gotten to within one, 14-13, following a 4-0 run in that first set before NSU took control.
NSU called timeout down 8-5 in the second set, and the Hawks eventually took a four-point lead, 11-7. The Spartans again caught fire, taking the lead back following a 6-1 run. After the teams traded points over the next several serves, Johnson and sophomore
Angie Darcus each had two kills during a closing 9-1 stretch.
Johnson sparked the offense in the third set in giving NSU a 10-5 lead. The Hawks cut their deficit to one, 10-9, but Norfolk State used a 5-0 run a little later to push its advantage to seven, 19-12. UMES got no closer than five points the rest of the way.
Senior
Coralie Jarema added nine kills on a .444 attack percentage, while Johnson and Frazier each posted seven kills. Setter
Darcy Moore played another great game with 38 assists and seven digs.
Robinson led UMES with five kills and five blocks.
NSU will play at William & Mary on Tuesday before heading to the Villanova Classic next weekend.
