PRINCESS ANNE, Md. –Rae Corbo tallied 20 points and Rachel Gordon posted her sixth double-double of the season, finishing the game with 19 points and 16 rebounds, to lift Norfolk State past UMES 73-66 on Saturday afternoon at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
The win moves NSU to 2-1 in MEAC play and 6-8 overall. The last time the Spartans started 2-1 in conference play was during the 2011-2012 season.
Gordon shot 50.0 percent (4-of-8) on the afternoon and was perfect from the free throw line shooting 11-of-11. She also tied her career-best of four blocks. Gordon now sits in sixth place all-time in career rebounding at NSU with 895 boards. She needs 11 more to tie Ann Theus for fifth place all-time.
Aside from Corbo and Gordon, junior Ebony Brown also posted double figures for the Spartans. Brown had 14 points and two assists.
UMES started the game on an 11-4 run after TeAmber Burke drove in the lane for a basket with 15:39 left in the first half. The Lady Hawks outscored NSU 32-30 in the paint.
Corbo knocked down a jumper at the 7:47 mark that capped a 16-9 run for the Spartans to tie the game at 20. There were five ties total in the game.
UMES answered on the other end with seven unanswered points, including a 3-pointer from Chalyse Taylor with 5:32 left in the half that gave the Lady Hawks a 27-20 lead over NSU. UMES shot 20.7 percent (6-of-29) from behind the arc.
Ebony Brown made a pair of free throws that sparked a 9-4 run for the Spartans as they closed out the half trailing UMES, 31-29. NSU shot only 32.4 percent (12-of-37) from the field in the first half while the Lady Hawks shot 48.1 percent (13-of-27).
Out of the break, junior Quineshia Leonard got things started for NSU with a layup in the paint to tie the game at 31 with 18:41 left. Leonard's basket was the beginning of a 10-2 run for the Spartans. Corbo drained a 3-pointer with 15:45 on the clock to give NSU a 39-33 lead over UMES.
The Lady Hawks came within two after Burke knocked down a 3-pointer with 11:55 remaining to make the score 44-42. Burke finished with nine points and four rebounds.
Leonard continued to be aggressive and made another layup in the paint to end a 13-7 run for the Spartans to increase the lead to nine as NSU led UMES 57-49 with 6:17 left in the second half. Leonard contributed nine points and seven rebounds.
After over three minutes without a field-goal, UMES finally scored as Jessica Long made a layup off of a turnover by Rae Corbo with 3:01 left. UMES continued to trail NSU, 63-58. The Lady Hawks outscored NSU off turnovers, 19-10.
NSU's last field-goal of the game was on a 3-pointer from Ebony Brown at the 2:09 mark that gave the Spartans a 66-59 lead over UMES. NSU shot free throws the rest of the way and finished the game shooting 71.4 percent (25-of-35) from the charity strike.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field and only 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from 3-point range. NSU also won the rebound battle, outrebounding UMES 51-41 on the afternoon.
NSU had a great game defensively as they posted a season-high 10 blocks. Gordon led the defensive effort with four blocks while Leonard had two. Kieera Basey, Ebony Brown, Jazamine Gray and Dominique Harper had one block each. Powell also had three steals and eleven rebounds.
Basey also tallied a team-high seven assists.
The Spartans face Delaware State on Monday at Memorial Hall in Dover, Del. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
