WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Robin Riethmueller and Daniel Grauel each picked up a win as Norfolk State opened the spring season with a 5-2 loss to William & Mary at the Millie West Tennis Facility on Tuesday morning.
Riethmueller competed at the No. 2 singles position and posted a 3-6, 6-5(3), 1-0 (10-4) victory over Will Juggins. In the No. 6 spot, Grauel defeated Scott Huang 4-6, 6-5, 1-0 (10-7).
NSU lost its other four singles matches. Sophomore Dzmitry Zyhmantovich fell to the Tribe's Ben Hoogland 1-6, 6-2, 4-6 at the No. 1 position. In the No. 3 singles match, Aaron Chaffee claimed a 6-5(4), 6-2 victory over junior Igor Braga. Damon Niquet upended senior Peter Ramstromer-Pello 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. Sophomore Samuel Lemberger rounded things out for NSU in singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to John Banks.
The Spartans lost the doubles point to the Tribe. Braga and Riethmueller teamed up at the No. 2 position and suffered a 6-2 loss to Addison Appleby and Ben Guthrie. Lemberger and Grauel fell to Banks and Hoogland, 6-3. Ramstromer-Pello and Zyhmantovich trailed Chaffee and Juggins 4-3, but the match was ended after William & Mary clinched the doubles point.
NSU takes on Old Dominion on Jan. 26 at the Folkes Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va. The matches are set to start at 9 a.m.
