Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Justin Black and Anthony Hubbard combined for 46 points as Morgan State downed the Norfolk State men's basketball team, 87-70, Saturday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

NSU fell for the first time in nearly two years in a conference regular season matchup despite hitting better than 52 percent in the game. The Bears, though, only turned the ball over nine times and fed off both their offensive rebounding and NSU's turnovers.

The Spartans fell to 10-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while Morgan State improved to 5-10 and 3-0.

Morgan State held a 29-7 edge in points off turnovers as NSU had 18 giveaways altogether. The Bears also posted an 18-2 advantage in second-chance points thanks to 14 offensive boards.

The Spartans, who had won 23 straight regular season MEAC games dating back to a loss to Delaware State on Feb. 15, 2012, hit 25-of-48 (52.1 percent) for the game, while the Bears had 17 more attempts and shot 31-of-65 (47.7 percent).

Seniors Pendarvis Williams and Malcolm Hawkins led NSU with 16 and 15 points, respectively, thanks to a combined 6-of-10 effort from the 3-point line. Norfolk State hit 7-of-14 for the game from beyond the arc.

Black tallied 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Hubbard added 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists for MSU.

Up 14 at the half, MSU pushed the lead to 17 early in the second stanza before the Spartans cut it to 12 twice, the latter on a pair of free throws by sophomore RaShid Gaston. A 10-2 run by NSU later in the half got the Spartans as close as 11, 67-56, with a little more than seven minutes to go, but they got no closer than that the rest of the way.

Seniors Brandon Goode and Riley Maye each picked up two quick fouls that allowed Morgan State to take a 17-9 lead five minutes into the game. The Spartans cut the deficit to two, 20-18, when senior Marese Phelps found Gaston streaking down the lane for a fastbreak layup. The Bears answered, though, with a 14-3 run.

Junior Kievyn Lila-St. Rose drove to the hoop and hit a scoop layup around a defender to end that MSU spurt, but the Bears eventually scored the last six points of the first half for a 42-28 lead at the break.

Gaston finished with 11 points on the night. Junior Jamel Fuentes posted nine assists and five rebounds.

Ian Chiles totaled 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting with seven boards for the Bears. Blake Bozeman also reached double figures with 12.

The Spartans will host Coppin State Monday at 8 p.m. at Echols Hall.
