Spartans Looking to Extend MEAC Win Streak as They Host Coppin State

NORFOLK, Va. - The Spartans are looking to keep their winning streak alive as they welcome Coppin State to Joseph Echols Hall on Monday night. Game time is at 6 p.m.

All-Time Series: Coppin State leads the series with NSU, 19-6. The Lady Eagles swept the series with the Spartans last season. The last time NSU defeated Coppin State was Jan. 31, 2005.

Last Time Out: Junior Rae Corbo tallied 16 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the free throw line to help Norfolk State claim a 61-52 victory over Morgan State Saturday afternoon at Joseph Echols Hall. This was the Spartans' third straight win and fourth straight conference win.

The win gives NSU (8-8, 4-1) its best start in MEAC play since the 2001-2002 season where the Spartans also started 4-1 in conference play.

The score was tied at 47 with 3:11 to play in the second half and the Spartans used a 14-5 run, which included 10 points from the free throw line, to overtake the Lady Bears (2-of-14, 0-3) in the final minutes of the game. NSU shot a season high 78.6 percent (33-of-42) from the line on the afternoon. Senior Rachel Gordon made 12 and Corbo had 10. Corbo's 10 brings her career total to 237 made free throws, which ties her with Miranda Bryant for eighth all-time in free throws made at NSU.

Gordon's 14 points and 16 rebounds in the game helped her earn her third consecutive double-double. She now has eight double-doubles on the season. Freshman Logan Powell also scored in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. She also had one steal.

NSU only shot 25.5 percent (13-of-51) from the field for the game and was only 2-of-7 from 3-point range. Freshman Kieera Basey and junior Ebony Brown also contributed to the Spartans' scoring effort. Basey tied her career-high of eight points. She also had a team-high three assists. Brown had nine points, and shot 75.0 percent (3-of-4) from the free throw line.

The Spartans outrebounded Morgan State 48-38 and held the Lady Bears to 27.4 percent (17-of-62) shooting on the afternoon. Carrington led Morgan State in scoring with 22 points. Robinson also finished with double figures for the Lady Bears with 12 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.

About Coppin State: Coppin State (6-10, 3-1) suffered an 82-50 loss to Hampton on Saturday at the Convocation Center in Hampton, Va. Larissa Carter led the scoring effort for the Lady Eagles, finishing the game with 18 points. Carter is the second leading scorer for Coppin State, averaging 13.1 points per game this season. Kyra Coleman, who leads Coppin State in scoring on the season with 14.7 points per game, only nine points and six rebounds.

The Lady Eagles were held to 31.3 percent (21-of-67) shooting from the field and shot 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the line.

Last Year Against Coppin State: On Jan. 19, NSU suffered a 56-51 loss to Coppin State at Joseph Echols Hall. NSU shot 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the floor as Aivah Parham led the way with 12 points and six rebounds. Ebony Brown was the only other Spartan in double figures. She finished the game with 11 points, which included three 3-pointers.

The Spartans held the Lady Eagles to just 30.6 (19-of-62) percent shooting from the field. Two players scored in double figures including Shawntae Payne, who led all scorers with 18 points, and Leola Spotwood tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.

On Feb. 2, the Spartans fell to the Lady Eagles 79-49 at the Physical Education Complex in Baltimore, Md. Batavia Owens led NSU with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Eagles outscored the Spartans 34-24 in the paint. Coppin State also outscored NSU 20-13 on second chance points.

Coppin State shot 41.2 percent (28-of-68) from the field. Three Coppin State players reached double figures including Spotwood, who led all scorers with 17 points and eight rebounds. Payne tallied 12 points and five assists while Janelle Lane finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds.

The Lady Eagles held the Spartans to just 29.8 percent (17-of-57) shooting on the afternoon. Aside from Owens, Rachel Gordon was the only other NSU player in double figures as she finished the game with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Scoring Leaders: Rae Corbo leads NSU in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game followed by Rachel Gordon, who is averaging 12.0 points per game. Ebony Brown rounds out the top-three scoring leaders for NSU, averaging 10.1 points per game.

Spartans on A Roll: NSU has won three straight games and four consecutive conference games so far this season. This is the best start in MEAC play for the Spartans since the 2001-2002 season where NSU started 4-0 in MEAC play.

Double-Doubling: Rachel Gordon posted her third-straight double-double of the season with 14 points and 16 rebounds in NSU's win over Morgan State on Saturday.

Moving Up the Charts: Rachel Gordon is in fifth place all-time in career rebounding at NSU with 924 rebounds. She needs 77 more boards to pass Sharon Wallace for first place, which means she needs to average 7.0 boards over the next 11 games.

Rae Corbo ranks eighth all-time in career free throws made at NSU with 237. Corbo needs to make 58 more to break into the top-five.

Corbo is also in 11th place all-time in 3-point field goals made at NSU with 55. She needs only four more to move into the top-10. Teammate Ebony Brown is in 12th place all-time in 3-point field goals made with 53. She needs six more to move into the top-10.

NCAA, MEAC Leaderboard: Rachel Gordon currently ranks No. 7 in the nation in rebounds per game and Rae Corbo is No. 69 in free throw percentage.

As a team, NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in 15 different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players rank in the top 5 in five different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounds, averaging 12.9 rebounds per game.
