Box Score BALTIMORE Md. – Morgan State won a pair of tight sets in the second half of its match with the Norfolk State volleyball team, allowing the Bears to come away with a 3-1 win over the Spartans on Friday night at MSU's Hill Field House
The Bears won the first set by a 25-16 score before the Spartans returned the favor with a 25-22 win in the second set. Morgan State was able to edge out NSU by scores of 25-22 and 25-20 in the third and fourth sets to pull out the victory.
The Bears improved to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC.
Sophomore
Dominique Parker had a career night for NSU (0-15, 0-3 MEAC). She hit .391 and led the Spartans with a career-best 13 kills. Junior
Angie Darcus added 12 kills for NSU.
The Spartans won the second set by three points, the only time either team had a three-point lead throughout the entire stanza. The Spartans fell behind by a 3-1 score to start things off, but after Parker tied it up with a kill, the teams traded points until NSU went ahead 10-8 on a kill from senior
Jasmin Flowers.
The Spartans won four of five points a short time later for a two-point edge, but the Bears won four of five to go ahead 20-18. Darcus had a kill and a block to tie it up, and then Parker had three kills over the last four serves to finish off the set.
NSU battled back in the third set after falling behind 5-2 and then by margins of four (9-5), five (11-6) and six points (16-10). Darcus had a kill to spark a 5-0 run, cutting the deficit to one. The Spartans got to within one several more times, the last at 21-20 on a kill by Darcus. They held off serve point twice, but a 24-20 deficit proved to be too much.
Two kills from sophomore
Sydney Dailey helped Norfolk State build a 5-2 lead in the fourth set. A 13-4 Morgan State run put NSU in a six-point hole. The Spartans got to within three late in the set before Zuri Smith had a kill and block for MSU to end the match.
NSU hit .114 and was done in by 30 attack errors and 16 service errors. Junior
Darcy Moore had 33 assists, 11 digs and six kills.
The Bears hit .193 and actually had one less kill on the night than the Spartans. MSU also had a 10-2 edge in blocks.
NSU will play its first home match of the year next Friday when the Spartans host Howard at 7 p.m. at Gill Gymnasium.
