Box Score BLACKSBURG, Va. – Host Virginia Tech made 12 3-pointers to offset a huge game from Norfolk State guard
Rae Corbo as the Hokies topped the Spartans 60-49 on Tuesday night at Cassell Coliseum.
Corbo scored 24 points, two shy of her career high, to keep the Spartans (0-2) within striking distance of the Hokies (2-1) of the ACC. But Tech hit 12-of-28 from long range, missing its school record for made treys by one, to pull away from NSU in an otherwise close game. Vanessa Panousis hit five 3-pointers en route to a team-high 17 points for the Hokies, while Rachel Camp (15 points) and Kelsey Conyers (10 points) hit three triples apiece.
NSU never led in its first matchup with the Hokies in 34 years. The teams were tied at 2-all before the Hokies went on a 7-0 run, which included 3-pointers by Conyers and Panousis, to claim an early 9-2 lead. But Corbo hit five of her first six field goals, including a 3-pointer with 12:23 left in the first half, to bring NSU within 14-13. Corbo scored 11 of the Spartans' first 13 points.
But after NSU forward
Amber Brown scored inside to again help the Spartans close to within a point at 16-15, Tech held NSU without a field goal for more than nine minutes. The Hokies outscored NSU 13-0 during that stretch, which included 3-pointers by Conyers, Camp and Brielle Blaire. NSU forward
Ronesia Spicer finally broke the drought with a layup with 49 seconds left in the first half, but the Spartans trailed 30-17 at the half.
The Spartans got as close as seven, 36-29, on a Corbo jumper with 11:51 remaining in the game. But true to form, the Hokies hit a 3-pointer to again pad their lead. Ten seconds after Corbo's bucket, Panousis answered with a trey to push the Tech lead back to 10 at 39-29. The Hokies' lead remained in double figures for the rest of the contest.
Tech's outside shooting accuracy overshadowed what was otherwise a solid defensive effort from NSU. The Spartans held the Hokies to 39 percent shooting from the floor, including an 8-of-23 mark from inside the 3-point arc. The Spartans also forced 21 Tech turnovers, which led to 20 NSU points.Â
NSU also held the edge in points in the paint (22-14) and bench points (17-6).
Corbo was 9-of-17 from the floor, 2-of-5 from 3-point range, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line. It was her seventh career 20-point game, and third in a row dating to the end of last season. She added three rebounds and two assists.
Outside of Corbo, the other 11 Spartans combined to shoot just 11-of-43.
Aivah Parham was the next-highest scorer, with seven points on 3-of-12 shooting. Freshmen

For the game, the Spartans shot 33 percent (20-of-60) from the floor and were outrebounded 42-30.
