Kayla Roberts scored a career-high 23 points, and visiting Norfolk State earned its first win of the season by outscoring Tennessee State 10-3 in overtime of a 65-58 win on the first day of the Teresa Phillips Thanksgiving Classic at the Gentry Center on Saturday.

Roberts hit what proved to be the go-ahead layup a minute and a half into the extra session. The Spartan defense did the rest, holding the Lady Tigers without a basket over the final four and a half minutes of overtime. All told, NSU (1-4) held TSU (1-4) to just 1-of-6 shooting in the overtime stanza.

Roberts hit her first four shots of the day and scored 10 points in a first half dominated by defense. NSU didn't trail for the final 8:20 of the opening period, and Roberts hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line with 32 seconds left in the half to give NSU a 23-22 lead going into the break.

TSU scored the first eight points of the second half. Chelsea Hudson and Briana Morrow both converted conventional three-point plays, and Hudson added another layup at the 17:08 mark to give the Lady Tigers their largest lead of the game, at 30-23.

The Spartans battled back, outscoring TSU 12-3 over a five-minute stretch to go back on top by four, at 41-37. Senior guard
Jazamine Gray got it started with a pair of free throws, then senior wing
Ebony Brown hit back-to-back baskets. Roberts also had four points in the spurt.

Neither team led by more than four over a taught final 14 minutes of regulation. NSU took a 55-52 lead on Roberts' second 3-pointer of the game with 1:18 remaining. TSU's Imani Davis had the answer with 36 seconds remaining, knotting the score at 55-all with a trey of her own. Both teams committed offensive fouls in the frantic closing 12 seconds of regulation, sending the game to overtime.

Jayda Johnson scored on a layup 26 seconds into the overtime to give TSU the 57-55 edge. But that would be the Lady Tigers' final field goal. NSU sophomore forward
Amber Brown tied it up with a layup of her own just 17 seconds later, then Roberts gave NSU the lead for good at 59-57 with 3:25 left to play.

Still, TSU got within 60-58 on a free throw by Hudson with 29 seconds left. But senior guard
Rae Corbo went 4-of-4 from the line and sophomore forward
Ronesia Spicer 1-of-2 in the final 22 seconds to clinch the win for the Spartans.

Corbo added 18 points and a team-high five assists for the Spartans. She was 6-of-17 from the floor, but 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Roberts shot 8-of-13 from the floor, 2-of-5 from 3-point range, and 5-of-8 from the line. She also had a team-high eight boards, matching her career best.

Corbo and Roberts were the only two Spartans in double figures, but
Ebony Brown added a season-high eight points, five rebounds and three steals off the bench. Spicer had six points and a career-high seven rebounds.

Hudson had 15 points and 11 rebounds for TSU, which was held to 36 percent shooting and committed 20 turnovers.

The Spartans face Nicholls State (1-2) at 1 p.m. (noon CT) on Sunday on the final day of the tournament.
