Corbo's NSU D-I Record 37 Points Not Enough in 73-71 Loss to Marshall

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Chukwuka Ezeigbo scored the winning field goal on a layup with 1.4 seconds left, spoiling a career night from Norfolk State's Rae Corbo, in Marshall's 73-71 win over the Spartans on Tuesday night at Echols Hall.

Corbo scored an NSU Division I-era record 37 points, easily her career high, to lead a game effort by the Spartans (2-6). Her two free throws with 25 seconds left tied the game for the ninth and final time at 71-71.

Marshall (6-2) got the ball in the hands of its leading scorer, wing player Leah Scott. Her contested shot in the lane missed, but Ezeigbo corralled the rebound on the right side of the basket and laid it back in with 1.4 seconds left to give the Thundering Herd the lead.

NSU called its final timeout and had to go the length of the floor to try and tie or win it. But the Spartans were unable to get off a shot after an inbounds pass deep in the backcourt, and Marshall held on.

The Spartans, who were ahead 32-26 at the intermission, did not trail in the second half until the game's final 81 seconds. Much of that was thanks to Corbo, who hit 13-of-22 from the floor, 5-of-10 from 3-point range and 6-of-7 from the foul line. Corbo, who scored 20 second-half points, poured in nine in the first 4:33 of the second half. Her trey with 15:27 left in the stanza gave NSU its largest lead of the game, 46-33.

Freshman forward Kayla Roberts also got into the act for the Spartans, hitting three 3-pointers in the first eight-plus minutes of the second half. Two of those came on back-to-back possessions, keeping the Spartans' lead at 55-43 with 11:47 remaining.

Then Marshall began its rally. The Thundering Herd went on a 13-1 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 56-all. Ashley Lambert had six points in the spurt for Marshall, including the tying free throw with 7:47 left.

A jumper by guard Brehanna Daniels helped NSU retake the lead. The Spartans stayed either tied or in the lead until the game's final 81 seconds. With NSU ahead 67-64, Marshall's A.J. Johnson hit the last of her six 3-pointers to tie the score with 2:33 left. Corbo missed at the other end and the Spartans turned the ball over. Chelsey Romero gave Marshall its first lead of the second half, 69-67, on a baseline jumper with 1:21 to play.

The teams traded scores down the stretch. NSU senior guard Jazamine Gray hit a tough baseline jumper to tie the score at 69 with 50 seconds left, but Romero scored on a put-back 13 seconds later to put the Herd back in front.

Corbo was fouled on a drive to the basket with 25 seconds left, and she calmly hit two free throws to tie the game at 71-all.

But for the second straight possession, Marshall got an offensive rebound and a second-chance basket. This time it was Ezeigbo doing the honors, providing the game-winner just before time ran out.

Marshall imposed its will early, taking a 12-3 lead five minutes into the game. But consecutive 3-pointers from Corbo tie the score at 12-12, and a 3-pointer by Kieera Basey gave the Spartans their first lead, at 17-14, with 10:02 left in the first half.

The Spartans ended the half on an 8-0 run, thanks to four points each by Corbo and forward Nia Roberts, to take a 32-26 lead into the locker room.

Corbo, the MEAC's leading scorer coming in, had her third straight game with at least 20 points and fifth such game of the year. She easily surpassed her career high of 26 points, set during her sophomore year against Texas Southern on Nov. 11, 2011. She also topped the previous NSU single-game Division I record of 36 points by guard Raychele Payne against South Carolina State on Feb. 21, 2009.

Corbo's 37 points are tied for the sixth-most in school history when considering both the Division I and II eras. No Spartan has scored more than that since LaTina Bullock scored 39 against St. Augustine's on Feb. 27, 1996 in NSU's next-to-last season in Division II.

Kayla Roberts posted her second straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Roberts (three) and Corbo (five) combined to hit eight of NSU's season-high nine 3-pointers. Kayla's older sister Nia, playing in her first game as a Spartan following her year on the sidelines as a transfer from Buffalo, had seven points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Johnson led Marshall with 19 points and was 6-of-10 from long range territory off the bench. Ezeigbo added 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Scott had 11 points and four assists for the Thundering Herd, who shot 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the floor for the game.

The Spartans travel to Greenville, N.C., for a 5 p.m. game at East Carolina on Saturday.
