Second-Half Surge Sends NSU Women to Win in MEAC Opener

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Rae Corbo scored a game-high 25 points, one shy of her career high, and helped lead a strong second-half charge that carried Norfolk State to a 68-63 win over Morgan State in the MEAC opener for both on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.

The Spartans (2-5, 1-0 MEAC) overcame a six-point halftime deficit by shooting 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from the floor in the second half. NSU also got 11 second-half points from second-leading scorer Kayla Roberts, who was held scoreless in the opening half.

Lexus Spears had 15 points to pace the Lady Bears (2-6, 0-1 MEAC).

Corbo started quickly, hitting a 3-pointer from the right wing just five seconds into the game. But that proved to be the Spartans' only lead of the first half. MSU scored 12 of the game's next 14 points to take a 12-5 lead, getting a pair of 3-pointers from Eva Myers and two layups by Spears.

The Spartans cut their deficit to two, 18-16, after a pair of layups by Aivah Parham. But the Lady Bears forced NSU into 17 first-half turnovers, helping MSU stretch its lead to six (29-23) at the half.

Myers hit another trey to start the second half, pushing MSU's lead to 32-23. But the Spartans came out firing after that, going on a 15-0 run over the next three and a half minutes to seize control of the game. Roberts scored seven straight points, including a three-point play, to give NSU its first lead since the opening minute of the game, at 33-32. After an MSU miss, Corbo drained another 3-pointer and Jazamine Gray's jumper in the paint capped the run and extended the NSU edge to 38-32.

Another three-point play by Roberts, this one with 7:33 left to play, gave the Spartans their largest lead of the game at 56-44. But the Lady Bears slowly clawed their way back into it, holding NSU to just two field goals over the next five minutes. Two free throws by Braennan Farrar brought MSU to within 63-61 with 1:50 left to play.

Things didn't look good for NSU on the ensuing possession. But with the shot clock winding down, Gray banked in a 3-pointer from the left wing to push NSU's lead back to two possessions, at 66-61, with 1:22 to play.

Farrar scored on a layup to cut her team's deficit to 66-63 with 38 seconds left. But Corbo hit two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to stretch the lead back to five, and NSU held on.

NSU shot a season-high 42.6 percent from the floor (23-of-54) to overcome 26 turnovers. Just nine of those came in the second half, however, when the Spartans made their move. Corbo was 6-of-9 from the floor, 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and 10-of-12 from the line to finish with a season-high point total. Her previous high was 24 at Virginia Tech. Corbo also had four rebounds and three assists.

Roberts shook off a slow start to finish with her first career double-double, 11 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. NSU outrebounded the Lady Bears 46-38, the Spartans' best performance on the boards this season. Gray, Parham and Kieera Basey finished with eight points apiece for NSU.

Myers chipped in 13 points and Farrar 10 for MSU. Ivy Harrington added eight off the bench.

The Spartans are off for the next nine days for first-semester exams before hosting Marshall at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
