Box Score 2 WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Norfolk State softball team opened up the 2014 season with a pair of losses at the Seahawk Invitational at UNC Wilmington on Saturday.
The host Seahawks scored 10 runs on just four hits in downing NSU 10-2 early in the afternoon. The Spartans turned right back around and then fell 5-1 to Liberty at Boseman Field.
Despite allowing 15 runs on the day, NSU pitchers gave up just two earned runs thanks to 13 errors from the Spartans over the two games.
The Seahawks used a seven-run third inning, scoring every run with two outs, to break a 2-2 tie with NSU in the first game. That scoring binge came after the Spartans had tied it up with a pair of runs in the top of the inning. Sophomore
Heather Dunning hit an RBI single to center, and freshman
Devon Bitler later scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 2-all.
KC Shue hit a two-run RBI single for UNC Wilmington (2-3) in the first inning for the first runs of the game. Shue finished 2-for-2 with four RBI.
Casey Rowland (1-1) gave up three hits and two earned runs in five innings for the Seahawks.
Liberty's Katie Zavodny went 3-for-3 and scored four runs for the Flames in the second game of the day for NSU.
Sophomore
Whitney Williams hit an RBI single in the top of the first for the only scoring of the contest for the Spartans. Williams finished 2-for-5 on the day and was the only Spartan to collect two hits.
The Flames scored a single run in five of the six innings they came up to bat.
Annah Jo Brittingham (1-3) gave up four hits and one earned run in seven innings for Liberty (1-5).
Senior
Jamie Schulle gave up nine runs, just one earned, with eight walks in 2.2 innings of work against UNC Wilmington. Junior
Liz Riley allowed nine hits and five runs, one earned, in all six innings against Liberty.
The Spartans will face UMBC Sunday at 10 a.m. to conclude their weekend.
