Lady Pirates Sink NSU 93-59

NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman Koryn Lawrence scored a season-high 16 points as Norfolk State fell to Hampton, 93-59, on Saturday afternoon at Joseph Echols Hall.

NSU fell to 6-5 in conference play and 10-12 overall, while Hampton improved to 12-0 in the MEAC and 21-4 on the season.

The Spartans kept the game close the first five minutes of the game as junior Ebony Brown knocked down a jumper with 14:36 to go before halftime to tie the game at 11. From there it was all Hampton as the Lady Pirates went on a 33-16 run to lead NSU 44-27 at the break.

NSU continued to struggle offensively in the second half. The first four points of the half for the Spartans came off of free throws from Rae Corbo and Ebony Brown. NSU finally made a field-goal at the 16:31 mark on another jumper from Ebony Brown to make the score 53-33.

The Lady Pirates answered on the other end as Kenia Cole drained a 3-pointer with 14:32 remaining to spark a 24-7 run. Hampton led by as many as 37 points after Malia Tate-DeFreitas closed out the run with another 3-pointer with 9:47 on the clock to make the score 77-40. For the game, Hampton shot 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from behind the arc.

From there the Spartans went on a 12-3 run. NSU continued to trail 80-52 at the 6:58 mark after a layup from freshman Logan Powell. Lauren Johnson scored the last points of the game for Hampton on a pair of free throws with 44 seconds left to give the Lady Pirates their final score.

For the game, Hampton shot 49.2 percent (32-of-65) from the field, while limiting the Spartans to 37.0 percent (20-of-54) shooting. The Lady Pirates also outscored NSU in the paint, 36-26. Both teams fared well at the free throw line. NSU shot 78.3 percent (18-of-23) and Hampton shot 75.0 percent (18-of-24) from the line.

Aside from Lawrence, Gordon was the only other NSU player to score in double figures. She finished the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds to post her 13th double-double of the season. Gordon now has 991 boards in her career. She is currently in second place all-time at NSU and needs only 10 more rebounds to move into first place.

Tate-DeFreitas led all scorers with 33 points. Also scoring in double figures for Hampton were Cole and Alyssa Bennett, who finished the game with 14 and 22 points, respectively. Bennett also had 11 rebounds.

NSU takes on Coppin State on Feb. 22 at the Physical Education Complex in Baltimore, Md. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
