Box Score 2 WILMINGTON, N.C. – UMBC and UNCG claimed victories over the Norfolk State softball team on Sunday during the second day of the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington.
Caitlin Chance drove in three runs to lead UMBC to a 5-3 victory over NSU on Sunday morning. Nicole Thomas then plated five runs to lift UNCG to an 11-3 win in five innings early in the afternoon at Boseman Field.
Chance hit an RBI single in the first and a two-run double in the third as the Retrievers staked claim to a 5-1 lead after four innings. Senior
Stephanie Wheatley came into the game in the fourth inning and shut down UMBC from there, but the Spartans were unable to mount a full comeback.
Senior
Morgan Boyd and sophomore
Heather Dunning each had a pair of hits for NSU (0-4) at the top of the lineup. Dunning got the Spartans on the board with an RBI single in the third and then scored in the sixth on a hit by junior
Alina Moriarty.
Sophomore
Whitney Williams followed with an RBI groundout, but Jessica Holte got out of the inning for UMBC (2-1) by forcing a groundout back to the circle.
Holte (2-0) pitched all seven innings gave up five hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out six. Jaclyn Buckley also had three hits for UMBC, including a double in the fourth that led to two more runs.
Senior
Jamie Schulle (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs in 3.0 innings of work. Wheatley pitched the last four after relieving Schulle in the fourth inning. Wheatley gave up just one hit in those last four innings of work.
Danielle Vega hit a two-run triple in the five-run first inning for UNCG (2-3). The Spartans scored two in the bottom half of the inning, as Williams hit an RBI groundout and senior
Kathy Cortez doubled with two outs to score another run.
Williams later smacked an RBI double in the fifth for NSU's last scoring of the day.
Thomas blasted a three-run home run in a four-run fourth and a two-run double in the fifth for UNCG.
Junior
Liz Riley (0-2) took the loss for NSU after failing to get out of the first inning. Raeanne Hanks (2-1) gave up two earned runs in three innings for the win.
A day after committing 13 errors in two games on Saturday, NSU had just one error on Sunday.
NSU will host the Spartan Clash beginning next Friday at the NSU Softball Field.
