La Salle Breaks Game Open Late in 12-0 Win

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – La Salle scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to help pull away from the Norfolk State softball team during a 12-0 win on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Spartan Clash at the NSU Softball Field.

The Explorers pounded out 19 hits, including just two extra-base hits, to turn a close game into a double-digit victory. The Spartans fell to 1-6 on the year.

Most of the damage came in the seventh for La Salle (1-2). Michelle Hagarty hit a two-run double, and five straight batters either hit a single or walked with the bases loaded for five addition runs. La Salle also hit three straight bases-loaded singles for three runs in the first inning, and Megan Hodgson belted a two-run homer in the sixth.

Alicia Aughton (1-1) picked up the win after giving up three hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Freshman Kayla McNair had two of NSU's four hits on the afternoon.

La Salle also left 13 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the second, fourth, and seventh.

The Spartans had their best chance to score in the fifth, when back-to-back singles and an error on the Explorers, all with two outs, loaded the bases. Reliever Mary Cate Scott induced a shallow fly to center to end that NSU threat.

Norfolk State will host the Spartan Classic next weekend, beginning with a pair of games against UMBC and Delaware beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday.
