Spartan Baseball Hosts Defending MEAC Champion Savannah State in 4-Game Series

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State baseball team returns home for a four-game series this Saturday and Sunday against defending MEAC champion Savannah State at Marty L. Miller Field. The teams play doubleheaders both days, starting at noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Spartans dropped to 1-6 after an 11-1 set-back at Duke on Wednesday. Freshman third baseman Justin Burrell accounted for the Spartans' lone run with an RBI single in the fifth inning. NSU used eight different pitchers in the game.

Cameron Day leads NSU with a .280 average thus far. He also had a team-high four RBI. Junior Jeff Di Fulgo (0-0, 0.93) and freshman Devin Hemmerich (0-1, 1.64) lead the team in ERA among pitchers with more than one appearance.

SSU is 3-5 following a 5-4 loss on Tuesday at Mercer. The Tigers are batting .297 as a team, with outfielder Lee Moore hitting at a .556 clip in 18 at-bats. Fellow outfielder David Richards is hitting .423 with a team-high six RBI. Junior college transfer Brandon Whitmore (1-1) leads the starting pitchers with a 3.27 ERA.
