Gordon’s Last Second Bucket Lifts NSU Over Morgan State 64-63

BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior forward Rachel Gordon made a layup with one second left to give Norfolk State a 64-63 victory over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.

NSU improves to 6-3 in MEAC play and 10-10 overall, while Morgan State falls to 0-9 in the conference and 2-20 on the season.

Morgan State held a 63-60 lead over the Spartans with 1:08 left to play. Junior Ebony Brown knocked down a jumper with 49 seconds left to pull NSU within one. Morgan State's Tracey Carrington missed a layup on the other end and junior Quineshia Leonard grabbed the rebound to give the Spartans the ball with 11 seconds left to play. Junior Rae Corbo tried missed the jumper with six seconds on the clock, but Gordon got the offensive board and the put back to seal the win for NSU.

Gordon posted her 11th double-double of the season and led the Spartans with 19 points and 17 rebounds. She now has 967 career rebounds at NSU. Gordon needs 34 more boards to pass Sharon Wallace for first place.

The Lady Bears started the first half on a 6-2 run after Danielle Forrest drained a 3-pointer with 17:45 to go before halftime. Ebony Brown made a pair of free throws to close out an 8-4 run with 13:40 left in the half that gave NSU a 10-8 lead over Morgan State.

Carrington, who led all scorers with 23 points, also knocked down a pair of free throws to keep Morgan State ahead of Norfolk State, 17-10, with 11:32 to play before the break. Carrington shot 85.7 percent (12-of-14) from the free throw line on the afternoon.

After going nearly three minutes without a field-goal, NSU finally scored as Rae Corbo drained a jumper at the 10:59 mark. NSU continued to trail the Lady Bears, 19-13.

Morgan State's next two points came off of free throws from Carrington and Dinah Jones to make the score 21-13 with 9:43 left in the half. For the game, the Lady Bears shot 67.7 percent (21-of-31) from the line.

Junior Jazamine Gray hit a jumper with 9:16 on the clock to spark an 16-9 run for NSU. Gordon closed out the run on a layup to keep the Spartans within one, 30-29, with 1:55 to go before the break.

Jones scored the last field-goal of the half with 15 seconds remaining to send Morgan State into halftime with a 34-31 lead over the Spartans.

Morgan State started the second half on an 8-0 run. Forrest and Danielle Robinson each knocked down a 3-pointer, while Simone Sampson made a layup in the paint to give the Lady Bears a 42-31 lead with 17:29 left in the game.

Freshman Dominique Harper scored the first points of the half for the Spartans to cut the lead down to single digits with 16:25 remaining in the game. Harper's basket ignited a 12-4 run for NSU as Ebony Brown made a layup in the paint to keep the team within three, 46-43, with 12:00 to go in the second half.

The Spartans trailed Morgan State by 10 points, 56-46, at the 8:00 mark. Gordon and freshman Dominique Harper cut the lead to six with a jumper and a pair of free throws to make the score 56-50 with 6:34 to go in the game. After going two minutes without a field-goal, Tracey Carrington answered on the other end to keep the Lady Bears ahead, 58-50.

NSU continued to be aggressive as Gordon made a layup in the paint to spark a 7-0 run with 5:53 left to play. Junior Rae Corbo kept the Spartans within one as she scored a basket at the 3:27 mark to make the score 58-57.

For the game, NSU shot only 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the field and shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from the free throw line. The Spartans outscored the Lady Bears, 30-18, in the paint and also outrebounded them 55-38. The last time NSU had at least 50 boards this season was at UMES on Jan. 15 when the Spartans totaled 51.

Aside from Gordon, Corbo and Brown finished the game in double-figures, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively. Gray and Powell each contributed six points.

The Spartans return home to face Howard on Monday night. Game time is 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.
