NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman Logan Powell tallied 18 points and nine rebounds, but that was not enough as Norfolk State suffered an 83-54 loss to Hampton on Saturday afternoon at the HU Convocation Center.

NSU (11-14, 7-7) shot only 23.8 percent (15-of-63) from the field and 75.9 percent (22-of-29) from the free throw line. Powell was the only Spartan to score in double figures. Junior Quineshia Leonard and senior Rachel Gordon rounded out the top three scorers for NSU, finishing the game with six and five points, respectively. Gordon also posted nine rebounds.

Offensively, the first half started off slow for the Spartans. NSU did not score a field goal until the 15:47 mark as Powell made a layup in the paint to make the score 13-2. The Lady Pirates led the Spartans, 29-7, with 10:12 to go before halftime after Nicole Hamilton knocked down a bucket. NSU closed out the half outscoring Hampton, 16-15, but still trailed at the break, 44-23. The Spartans shot only 18.2 percent (6-of-33) from the field in the first half.

Malia Tate-DeFreitas made a layup in the paint at the 15:08 mark to cap a 10-6 run for the Lady Pirates to start the second half. Hampton outscored the Spartans, 32-22, in the paint. NSU answered on the other end with a 3-pointer from Powell with 14:54 left to play. Powell's basket sparked a 14-2 run by the Spartans. Junior Rae Corbo closed out the run with a pair of free throws to make the score 56-44 with 10:52 remaining in the game.

From there, it was all Hampton. The Lady Pirates closed out the game with a 27-10 run. Six of the Spartans last 10 points came from the free throw line. Leonard scored NSU's last field-goal with 39 seconds left on the clock.

Hampton shot 34.6 percent (27-of-78) from the field, including a 38.5 percent (10-of-26) mark from behind the arc. The Lady Pirates also shot 65.5 percent (19-of-29) from the free throw line. Tate-DeFreitas led all scorers with 19 points. Hamilton finished with 18 points and nine boards. Alyssa Bennett posted a double-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five steals, while Kenia Cole added 16 points.

NSU returns home to take on Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.
