Canisius Finishes off Series Sweep of NSU

NORFOLK, Va. – Brett Siddall hit the go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning in game 1, then Jimmy Luppens and Christ Conley combined for seven hits in the nightcap as Canisius topped Norfolk State 7-5 and 9-1 on Monday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

The wins gave the Golden Griffins (10-3) a four-game series sweep of NSU (3-12).

In game 1, Siddall's three-run homer in the top of the seventh and final inning gave the Golden Griffins their first and only lead of the day, sending Canisius to a 7-5 victory.

The Spartans struck first by scoring three times in the bottom of the second. Ross Cardwell continued his hot hitting by leading off with a double deep into the left-field corner. He scored on a single by Cameron Day. Tyon Ore and Robert Barefoot later added RBI singles to push the lead to 3-1.

Canisius scored once in the third. After a two-out error by NSU prolonged the inning, Jesse Puscheck hit a run-scoring single. The Spartans pushed the lead back to three, 4-1, on Cardwell's double-play grounder in the bottom of the inning.

But Canisius slowly chipped away. Conley hit an RBI single and Ronnie Bernick a sac fly in the fourth, and Shane Zimmer had a run-scoring single in the fifth to get the Golden Griffins within 5-4.

In the seventh, Puscheck singled to lead off the inning and Zimmer drew a walk from NSU reliever Jeff Di Fulgo (0-1). Siddall then greeted Spartan reliever Stephen Butt by sending the first pitch of the at-bat over the right-field wall for Siddall's third homer of the season and second of the weekend series.

Di Fulgo took the loss, allowing three runs and four hits in three innings. Canisius reliever Mike Tolsma (2-0) picked up the win with three scoreless innings of work.

NSU out-hit Canisius 13-11 in the opener. Cardwell was 3-for-4, while Andre' Moore, Ore and Cody Ellis had two apiece.

Puscheck was 3-for-4 and Siddall went 2-for-4 for the Golden Griffins.

In game 2, Canisius wasted d little time in taking the early lead. Ryan Coppinger led off with a single and later scored on Luppens' single. The Golden Griffins tacked on four more in the second, capped by a two-run single from Luppens.
Luppens was 4-for-4 with three RBI while Conley was 3-for-4.

NSU's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth. Robert Reaume led off with a double and scored on Ellis' groundout.

Cardwell was 4-for-7 in the doubleheader for NSU, while Ellis went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Josh Shepley (1-0) picked up for the win for Canisius by throwing four scoreless innings. Josh Vales (1-2) was saddled with the loss, giving up five runs in 2.1 innings of work.

The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday in a 5 p.m. game at Longwood.
