FARMVILLE, Va. – Kyri Washington hit a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and Matt Dickason singled in the go-ahead run later in that frame to help Longwood rally for a 6-4 win over Norfolk State on Wednesday afternoon at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
The Lancers moved to 9-9 with the win, while NSU fell to 3-13.
The game was tight throughout. Longwood took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Brandon Delk's RBI single. But the Spartans tied it up in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Andre' Moore.
Washington gave the Lancers the lead again with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fourth. But again, NSU had the answer. Cameron Day delivered a two-out hit of his own, lining a single into center field to score Moore and Justin Lee in the top of the fifth. Later in the inning, Day scored from second on a Tyon Ore single, giving the Spartans their first lead of the game at 4-3.
But Washington knotted the score again with his solo shot off Cooper Jones in the seventh, setting the stage for another Lancers rally. Delk then singled off NSU reliever Troy Applin, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Dickason's single to right.
The Lancers added an insurance run in the eighth on Mac McCafferty's solo homer off Applin.
Scott Burkett, who started the game at designated hitter, moved to the mound in the sixth and earned the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief for Longwood. Jones took the loss, allowing three hits and two runs in 2.2 innings of relief.
NSU right hander Stephen Butt took a no-decision in his first start as a Spartan. He allowed three runs and fanned a season-high five in four innings of work.
Delk was 4-for-4, while Dickason, Washington and McCafferty had two hits each for Longwood, which outhit the Spartans 13-7. Ross Cardwell was 2-for-3 and Ore 2-for-4 for NSU.
The Spartans open MEAC play this weekend when they host Delaware State for a three-game series at Marty L. Miller Field. The teams play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday.
