All-Time Series: NSU leads the series with UMES, 22-13.
Scoring Leaders: Rae Corbo leads NSU in scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game followed by Rachel Gordon, who is averaging 11.7 points per game. Ebony Brown rounds out the top-three scoring leaders for NSU, averaging 8.5 points per game.
Breaking 1,000 Points: Rae Corbo has 967 career points at NSU. She needs only 33 more to become a member of the "1,000 Point Club" at NSU. Rachel Gordon has 956 career points and needs only 44 more to break 1,000.
NCAA, MEAC Leaderboard: Rachel Gordon currently ranks No. 7 in the nation in rebounds per game and Rae Corbo is No. 51 in free throw percentage.
Gordon ranked 16th in career rebounding among active players through Feb. 27. She also ranks 13th in career rebounding average at 9.8. Corbo ranked 44th in career free throw percentage among active players through Feb. 27.
As a team, NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in seven different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players rank in the top 5 in four different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounds, averaging 12.2 rebounds per game. Rae Corbo also leads the league in free throw percentage at 85.0 percent on the season.
Last Time Out: Freshman Logan Powell tallied 18 points and nine rebounds, but that was not enough as Norfolk State suffered an 83-54 loss to Hampton on Saturday afternoon at the HU Convocation Center.
NSU (11-14, 7-7) shot only 23.8 percent (15-of-63) from the field and 75.9 percent (22-of-29) from the free throw line. Powell was the only Spartan to score in double figures. Junior Quineshia Leonard and senior Rachel Gordon rounded out the top three scorers for NSU, finishing the game with six and five points, respectively. Gordon also posted nine rebounds.
Offensively, the first half started off slow for the Spartans. NSU did not score a field goal until the 15:47 mark as Powell made a layup in the paint to make the score 13-2. The Lady Pirates led the Spartans, 29-7, with 10:12 to go before halftime after Nicole Hamilton knocked down a bucket. NSU closed out the half outscoring Hampton, 16-15, but still trailed at the break, 44-23. The Spartans shot only 18.2 percent (6-of-33) from the field in the first half.
Malia Tate-DeFreitas made a layup in the paint at the 15:08 mark to cap a 10-6 run for the Lady Pirates to start the second half. Hampton outscored the Spartans, 32-22, in the paint. NSU answered on the other end with a 3-pointer from Powell with 14:54 left to play. Powell's basket sparked a 14-2 run by the Spartans. Junior Rae Corbo closed out the run with a pair of free throws to make the score 56-44 with 10:52 remaining in the game.
From there, it was all Hampton. The Lady Pirates closed out the game with a 27-10 run. Six of the Spartans last 10 points came from the free throw line. Leonard scored NSU's last field-goal with 39 seconds left on the clock.
Hampton shot 34.6 percent (27-of-78) from the field, including a 38.5 percent (10-of-26) mark from behind the arc. The Lady Pirates also shot 65.5 percent (19-of-29) from the free throw line. Tate-DeFreitas led all scorers with 19 points. Hamilton finished with 18 points and nine boards. Alyssa Bennett posted a double-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five steals, while Kenia Cole added 16 points.
About UMES: The Lady Hawks (7-19, 3-11) are coming off of a 80-48 loss at Coppin State on Saturday at the Physical Education Complex in Baltimore, Md. For the game, UMES shot 29.3 percent (17-of-58) from the field and was 6-of-20 from 3-point range. The Lady Hawks also shot 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the free throw line. Mariah McCoy, Ashleigh Claybrooks, Shawnee Sweeney and Jessica Long led UMES with eight points each. Long also had four assists and four steals.
On the season, UMES is averaging 63.3 points and 46.3 rebounds per game. Long leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.4 points per game. Sweeney is second in scoring, averaging 10.0 points per game. Claybrooks rounds out the top three scorers for the Lady Hawks, averaging 8.1 points per game.
Last Time Against UMES: In the first meeting, Rae Corbo tallied 20 points and Rachel Gordon posted her sixth double-double of the season, finishing the game with 19 points and 16 rebounds, to lift Norfolk State past UMES 73-66 on Jan. 11 at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
Gordon shot 50.0 percent (4-of-8) on the afternoon and was perfect from the free throw line shooting 11-of-11. She also tied her career-best of four blocks. Aside from Corbo and Gordon, junior Ebony Brown also posted double figures for the Spartans. Brown had 14 points and two assists.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field and only 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from 3-point range. NSU also won the rebound battle, outrebounding UMES 51-41 on the afternoon.
NSU had a great game defensively as they posted a season-high 10 blocks. Gordon led the defensive effort with four blocks while Quineshia Leonard had two. Kieera Basey, Ebony Brown, Jazamine Gray and Dominique Harper had one block each. Powell also had three steals and eleven rebounds.
Basey also tallied a team-high seven assists.
