RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond snapped the Norfolk State men's tennis team's two-match winning streak with a 5-2 victory over the Spartans at the Westhampton College Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.
The loss drops NSU to 5-5 overall, while Richmond improves to 7-10 on the season.
Sophomore Dzmitry Zyhmantovich and senior Peter Ramstromer-Pello each claimed wins in singles play. At the No. 1 singles, Zyhmantovich won his eighth-straight match, posting a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0(9) victory over Ethan Dunbar. Ramstromer-Pello won his third-straight singles match. He competed at the No. 3 spot, where he defeated Alex Hahn, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The Spartans opened the match in the doubles competition. Zyhmantovich and Ramstromer-Pello fell to Ethan Dunbar and Jacob Dunbar, 8-4. Kent Austin and Igor Braga teamed up at the No. 2 spot, where they suffered an 8-4 loss to Hahn and Canyon Teague. Richmond's Noah Fenton and Johnathan Quenard were up 7-3 against Samuel Lemberger and Daniel Grauel, but the match was abandoned.
NSU continued to struggle in singles play. Jacob Dunbar claimed a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Braga in the No. 2 slot. Lemberger suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Teague at No. 4 singles. In the No. 4 spot, Quenard posted a 6-1, 6-2 win against Grauel. Austin closed out the singles competition with a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Fenton.
The Spartans return to the courts on Sunday to face VCU at the Thalhimer Tennis Courts in Richmond, Va. Play will begin at 11 a.m.
