Box Score 2 ROCK HILL, S.C. – Marist topped the Norfolk State softball team 10-2 in five innings, and then Youngstown State made it a day's sweep of the Spartans with a 3-1 victory on Saturday during the first day of the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational at Terry Field.
A pair of home runs by the Red Foxes did NSU in during the first game of the day, and the Penguins shut the Spartans down in the second to drop Norfolk State to 2-11 overall this year.
A RBI double and two bases-loaded walks allowed Marist (3-4) to score in the top of the first, and Janine Lalli belted a two-run homer in the third for a 5-0 lead.
The Spartans got those two runs back in the bottom of the frame, the first run when sophomore
Whitney Williams hit an RBI single to center to score junior
Alina Moriarty. Two straight walks loaded the bases, and junior
Sommer Di Fulgo hit a sac fly to score Williams.
Reliever Paige Lewis (2-1) got out of the inning and eventually got the win after pitching three scoreless innings. Marist scored twice in the fourth, and Alyssa Zahka hit a three-run homer in the fifth for the final scoring.
Kayla Haslett scattered six hits in seven innings for Youngstown State (5-5), and two runs in the bottom of the second for the Penguins proved to be the difference.
Two errors in the inning on the Spartans allowed YSU to put runners on second and third with two outs, and Maria Lacatena doubled to left field to make it 2-0.
The Penguins manufactured a run in the fourth after freshman
Kayla McNair drove in a run in the first part of the inning. The Spartans, though, could do no more damage.
Senior
Stephanie Wheatley (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits in four innings.
Four different players had two hits on the day for the Spartans.
NSU will play Connecticut at 11 a.m. and Youngstown State at 1 p.m. on Sunday to close out the tournament.
