Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Visiting Canisius pounded out 30 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at
Marty L. Miller Field. The Golden Griffins (8-3) won the opener 17-5 and took game two, 12-1.
Anthony Massicci went 6-for-10 with six runs scored and Jimmy Luppens had five hits and knocked in seven runs for Canisius.
Ross Cardwell paced NSU (3-10) with four hits in the two games, while shortstop
Justin Lee doubled twice.
Both teams scored twice in the first inning of the opener, but Canisius blew it open with an eight-run fifth inning. Luppens had a three-run double and Massicci a two-run single in the frame, which included seven hits.
Brett Siddall added a two-run homer in the eighth and Canisius tacked on five more runs in the ninth.
Cardwell,
Robert Barefoot and
Robert Reaume added run-scoring singles in the later innings for NSU. Cardwell was 3-for-4 and Reaume was 2-for-2 with a double off the bench for the Spartans.
Justin Bhatti (1-3) allowed nine hits and 10 runs in five innings to take the loss. Alex Godzak (2-1) allowed four hits and three runs, one earned, in six innings to earn the win for Canisius.
Canisius scored five unearned runs in the top of the first inning in the nightcap. Jose Torralba had a two-run single in the inning, which also included two NSU errors.
Torralba added a two-run single in a three-run third inning for the Golden Griffins.
NSU scored its lone run in the bottom of the third.
Andre' Moore hit a one-out double and scored on Lee's second double of the game.
But that would be all NSU could muster off Canisius righty Rohn Pierce (3-0), who got the win by striking out eight in six innings. He walked none and allowed six hits.
Jesse Puscheck was 3-for-4 in the second game and scored three times. Massicci and Luppens had two hits each and Torralba drove in four. Luppens went 5-for-8 with four runs scored and seven RBI in the doubleheader.
Matt Outman (1-1) took the loss for the Spartans. He allowed seven hits and eight runs – just one earned – in two-plus innings.
The teams play another doubleheader on Monday starting at 11 a.m.
