Box Score 2 ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Norfolk State softball team hit four home runs to lift the Spartans to a 7-2 victory over UConn on Sunday morning at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational at Terry Field.
NSU then dropped its second tight game this weekend to Youngstown State in a 2-1 loss to the Penguins in the early afternoon, falling to 3-12 overall on the season.
Junior
Alina Moriarty - on her 21st birthday no less - hit two of NSU's four homers in the game against the Huskies. She was one of four Spartans to have two hits in the game, as the top four spots in the lineup went 8-of-14.
The Spartans did not get going until the later part of the game. UConn hit an RBI single in the first and scored another thanks to an NSU error in the fourth. Norfolk State did get one run back in the bottom of the fourth when freshman
Kayla McNair homered to lead off the inning.
NSU then cranked it up in the fifth and six innings, scoring three runs each time. In the fifth, senior
Morgan Boyd led off with a bunt single, and sophomore
Whitney Williams followed with a homer to center. Moriarty then made it back-to-back with a shot to right field.
In the sixth, NSU put runners on second and third with one out, and Williams scored the first run with a sac fly to center. Moriarty followed with her second home run of the game to cap the scoring.
Senior
Jamie Schulle (3-5) picked up the win, striking out five while allowing just two hits in seven innings. Moriarty (2-for-4) and Williams (2-for-3) each drove in three runs, while Boyd and
Heather Dunning also had two hits apiece.
Youngstown State (6-6) then knocked off the Spartans a day after taking a 3-1 victory on Saturday. Casey Crozier (4-2) limited NSU to just five hits in seven innings while striking out eight.
After the Penguins left the bases loaded in the fourth, they scored both of their runs in the fifth when Miranda Castiglione hit a two-run homer with no outs.
The Spartans mounted a rally in the seventh, as a fielding error on YSU and a walk were followed by a single by pinch hitter
Nikki Jones. With the bases loaded and one out, a passed ball on the Penguins scored Williams, but Crozier forced a pair of groundouts with runners in scoring position to end the game.
Senior
Stephanie Wheatley (0-3) allowed seven hits and two earned runs in five innings.
Dunning had two hits in the second game of the day as well.
NSU will play a doubleheader against North Carolina A&T on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. at the NSU Softball Field.
