NORFOLK, Va. – No. 6 seed Norfolk State will take on the No. 11 seed, Maryland Eastern Shore, on Monday afternoon in the opening round of the 2014 MEAC Tournament. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope Arena.

All-Time Series: NSU leads the series with UMES, 23-13. This is the fourth meeting between NSU and UMES in the postseason. The Spartans hold a 3-0 advantage over the Lady Hawks in the postseason series.
NSU on the Rise: For just the third time in 12 seasons, NSU has reached double-digit wins this year. Since the 2002-03 season, NSU has only had 10 or more wins in 2004-05 and 2011-12 (12 wins both years).
Scoring Leaders: Rae Corbo leads NSU in scoring, averaging 12.4 points per game followed by Rachel Gordon, who is averaging 11.4 points per game. Logan Powell rounds out the top-three scoring leaders for NSU, averaging 8.4 points per game.
NCAA, MEAC Leaderboard: Rachel Gordon currently ranks No. 10 in the nation in rebounds per game and Rae Corbo is No. 42 in free throw percentage.
Gordon ranked 16th in career rebounding among active players through March 6. She also ranks 15th in career rebounding average at 9.7. Corbo ranked 46th in career free throw percentage among active players through March 2.
As a team, NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in seven different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players rank in the top 5 in four different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounds, averaging 11.8 rebounds per game. Rae Corbo also leads the league in free throw percentage at 85.0 percent on the season.
Breaking 1,000 Points: Rae Corbo has 984 career points at NSU. She needs only 16 more to become a member of the "1,000 Point Club" at NSU. Rachel Gordon has 970 career points and needs 30 more to break 1,000.
Last Time Out: Norfolk State closed out the regular season with a 63-53 loss to North Carolina Central on Thursday night at Joseph Echols Hall. The Spartans (12-15, 8-8) shot only 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the field, but was 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the free throw line on the night. Freshman Logan Powell was the only Spartan to score in double figures, finishing the game with 16 points and eight rebounds. Junior Jazamine Gray added nine points on 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. Freshman Koryn Lawrence recorded eight points and four steals, while junior Rae Corbo and senior Rachel Gordon added six points each. Gordon also posted eight boards.
N.C. Central enjoyed its double digit halftime lead after it shot 48.1 percent in the first half. The Lady Eagles led by 14 at 33-19 when after Jessica Freeman made a pair of free throws with three seconds left in the first half. The last time the Spartans scored less than 20 points in a half this was in the first half at Savannah State on Jan. 27.
NSU started the second half with four unanswered points as Gordon and Lawrence both scored on layup in the paint to keep the Spartans within 10, at 33-23, with 18:30 left in the game. For the game, the Spartans outscored N.C. Central 36-28 in the paint.
The Lady Eagles answered on the other end with a basket by Raquel Davis that sparked a 13-6 run. Davis totaled 13 points and rebounds on the night. Khyra Conerly closed out the run for N.C. Central with a pair of free throws at the 14:01 mark to make the score 46-29 . The Lady Eagles shot 66.7 percent (18-of-27) from the line.
N.C. Central led by as many 19 points in the second half, 58-39, after another free throw from Freeman with 5:43 remaining in the game. Freeman led all scorers with 22 points. She also posted three assists.
About UMES: UMES (8-20, 4-12) is coming off of a 74-71 overtime win over Delaware State on Thursday night at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne, Md. For the game, UMES shot 34.7 percent (25-of-72) from the field and was 7-of-24 from 3-point range. The Lady Hawks also finished the game shooting 63.0 percent (17-of-27) from the free throw line. Mariah McCoy led UMES with 21 points. TeAmber Burke added 13 points, while Shawnee Sweeney tallied 11. Ashleigh Claybrooks posted a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
On the season, the Lady Hawks are averaging 63.4 points and 46,2 rebounds per game. Jessica Long leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.4 points per game. Sweeney is second in scoring, averaging 10.0 points per game. Claybrooks rounds out the top three scorers for UMES, averaging 8.3 points per game.
Last Time Against UMES: Four Spartans scored in double figures to give NSU a 61-57 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on March 3 at Joseph Echols Hall. Freshman Dominique Harper led the balanced scoring effort for NSU as she finished the game with 12 points. Junior Rae Corbo and freshman Koryn Lawrence contributed 11 points each. Lawrence also grabbed seven rebounds. Junior Quineshia Leonard posted a double-double with 10 points and 14 boards. Also scoring for NSU was senior Rachel Gordon, junior Jazamine Gray and freshman Logan Powell. They finished the game with eight, six and three points, respectively.
For the game, NSU shot 39.1 percent (25-of-64) from the field and were only 25 percent (3-of-12) from 3-point range. The Spartans also shot 50 percent (8-of-16) from the free throw line. Defensively, the Spartans outrebounded UMES, 46-40.
Jessica Long was the only UMES player to score in double figures. She led UMES with 19 points and four steals. The Lady Hawks shot 30.3 percent (20-of-66) from the field and 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the free throw line.
