Spartans Fall to Longwood, 5-2

NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman Liza Gordeeva and junior Yvonne Kamegne each picked up wins, but the Norfolk State women's team's three-match win streak came to an end as Longwood pulled off a 5-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon at the Everett Tennis Center.

NSU falls to 7-8 on the season while Longwood improves to 3-7.

Gordeeva competed at the No. 1 singles position, where she defeated Malin Allgurin, 7-6(4), 6-2 to claim her fourth-straight singles win of the season. Kamegne also posted her fourth consecutive victory as she posted a 7-6, 6-1(2) win against Anna Pelak at the No. 4 spot.

The Spartans fought hard in the other singles matches, but could not get the win. At the No. 2 position, Longwood's Paloma Alatorre upended sophomore Andrea Macchiavello, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Junior Mafalda Lhorca competed in the No. 3 slot, where she fell to Sarah Moomau, 6-0, 6-4. In the No. 5 position, junior Krystal Scott suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Mason Thomas. Freshman Ana Popovic closed out the singles competition with a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Bethany Law.

NSU's only win in doubles play came at the No. 1 spot. Macchiavello and Gordeeva teamed up to defeat Allgurin and Moomau, 8-7(4). Macchiavello and Gordeeva are now 5-2 overall in doubles competition. Lhorca and Scott competed at the No. 2 position, where they suffered an 8-2 loss to Alatorre and Pelak. Kamegne and freshman Marie Habiyaremye closed out doubles play with an 8-6 loss to Thomas and Law.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday against South Alabama. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Everett Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach, Va.
