Box Score 2 FARMVILLE, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team came up on the wrong end of a pair of pitchers' duels on Tuesday evening during a non-conference trip to Longwood. The Lancers hit a walk-off home run to win the first game, 2-1, and then followed that up with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
Longwood catcher Megan Baltzell hit a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Lancers to the victory in the first game. A two-run second inning in the second contest was enough for Longwood to come away with the sweep.
Senior
Jamie Schulle gave up five hits and two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work in the first game. With two strikeouts, she also became NSU's all-time leader in K's. She passed Angela Smith, who set the previous record with 421 from 1994-97.
NSU fell to 18-20 overall this season despite allowing just 12 hits to a Longwood squad that was hitting .305 and averaging five and a half runs per game coming into the day. The Lancers improved to 33-12 overall.
Baltzell's shot in the first game ended a tight pitcher's duel as neither team could get much going offensively. The teams combined for just nine hits.
In the third inning, Emily Murphy hit an infield single with runners in scoring position to get Longwood on the board. Murphy then stole second, but Baltzell was thrown out trying to go home on the play to end the inning.
The Spartans had stranded a runner on third with one out in the top of the third, but they finally broke through in the top of the seventh to tie it up at 1-1.
Junior
Alina Moriarty led off with a single and went to second on a groundout. Then with two outs, junior
Sommer Di Fulgo singled into left to bring home Moriarty before Baltzell ended the game in the bottom half of the frame.
Libby Morris (15-7) struck out five and allowed four hits and one earned run in seven innings for the win.
Schulle also took the loss in game 2 to fall to 13-11 on the season.
In that second contest, the Lancers put runners in scoring position with one out in the second inning. A bunt single scored one run, and Baltzell hit another RBI single to make it 2-0.
Schulle got out of the jam, and then NSU got a run back in the third. Seniors
Kathy Cortez and
Morgan Boyd led off the innings with a pair of singles. After Cortez was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice, freshman
Kayla McNair doubled to right field to score one run.
The Lancers got out of the inning without any more damage and then scored one more run in the fourth on an error on NSU on a bunt single.
Cortez had a pair of hits in the second game.
Elizabeth McCarthy (15-5) got the victory for Longwood after striking out five and giving up two hits in four scoreless innings in relief.
NSU will host North Carolina Central this Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the NSU Softball Field.
