Thomas Joins Spartan Basketball for 2014

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's basketball program rounded out its 2014 recruiting class with Division I transfer Malik Thomas, who signed with the Spartans this week.

A small forward who can also play at guard, Thomas arrives at NSU from Boston University for the 2014-15 season. Standing 6-foot-7 and 190 pounds, he will have one year of eligibility remaining as a D-I graduate transfer. Thomas is eligible to compete immediately.

"Malik is a highly-skilled player and will probably be our most versatile," said head coach Robert Jones. "At 6-7, almost 6-8, he can play anywhere from the 2 through 4 positions, so he adds depth at both guard and forward. He can handle the ball like a point guard and also hit the 3-pointer.

"Competing at Boston University for the past several years, he automatically adds experience to our relatively young basketball team. We look forward to Malik contributing right away from the day he steps on campus."

Hailing from Harlem, N.Y., Thomas will be a redshirt senior in 2014-15 after playing three years at BU. He had his best season in 2012-13 as a redshirt sophomore, averaging 7.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting 46.4 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from 3-point range. He started 16 games that season, competing in 30 altogether, and tallied 39 assists, 31 steals and 20 blocks on the year.

Thomas played in 25 games as a redshirt freshman in 2011-12 and averaged 4.8 points and 3.9 rebounds. In his redshirt junior year in 2013-14, he tallied 5.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in 35 games. He had career highs of 18 points against Army and 10 rebounds at Navy in a span of three games in the middle of the season.

Thomas redshirted during his freshman year at BU in 2010-11. He played at Wedleigh HS in Manhattan and averaged 18 points and 14 rebounds per game as a senior. He was named first-team All-Manhattan by both the NY Daily News and the NY Post.

Thomas joins incoming freshmen Jordan Butler, Deven Dorsett, Zaynah Robinson and Malik Gray and junior college transfer D'Shon Taylor in forming NSU's 2014 recruiting class. NSU will return seven players from the 2013-14 team and have seven newcomers altogether, including redshirt junior Jeff Short, who sat out last season as a D-I transfer.
