Coppin State Downs NSU, 3-1

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State kept the Norfolk State volleyball team winless on the season with a 3-1 victory over the Spartans on Sunday afternoon in a conference matchup at CSU's Physical Education Complex.

The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead by winning the first two sets, 25-12 and 25-18. After the Spartans prevented the sweep with a 25-20 third-set victory, Coppin State ended the match in the fourth set, 25-17.

CSU improved to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC, while visiting NSU dropped to 0-14 and 0-2.

Coppin State got big matches from Cindy Okpegbue (20 kills, 11 digs, three blocks) and Ariel Richard (10 kills). The Eagles hit .237 for the match.

After falling behind 2-0, the Spartans got going in the third set. A service ace from senior Jasmin Flowers tied it up at 6-6 in the early going. Errors on the Eagles – they gave away 12 points in the set – pushed NSU's lead to 12-9, but CSU bounced back to grab a two-point edge, 18-16.

Two kills from sophomore Tori Tulensru and two service aces by senior Adriana Ramos during a 6-0 run made it 22-18 in favor of the Spartans. Junior Janay Frazier later ended the set with a kill, one of her team-leading seven on the afternoon.

The Spartans were doomed in the first set by a 10-1 run, which included both teams each being awarded a point by the officials. The Eagles had a six-point lead midway through the second set and extended it even more thanks to a 5-1 run. NSU got to within four before CSU surged ahead.

The Eagles had a 5-0 lead in the fourth set, but Flowers twice had kills to get NSU to within three. The Spartans again found themselves down by three at 15-12 on a block by junior Darcy Moore. Coppin State methodically pulled away from there to end the contest.

Tulensru and sophomore Dominique Parker each had six kills. The Spartans hit .027.

CSU had the edge in kills (49-30), digs (47-31) and blocks (9-2).

NSU will be on the road yet again next weekend when the Spartans play at Morgan State on Friday at 7 p.m.
