Box Score TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore guard
Koryn Lawrence scored a career-high 23 points to lead three Norfolk State players in double figures, and the Spartans pulled away in the second half for a 68-50 MEAC victory over Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center.
Lawrence was an efficient 10-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line and also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds for the Spartans (3-11, 2-1 MEAC), who snapped their six-game losing streak. Senior guard
Rae Corbo added 15 points and seven rebounds, and freshman forward
Kayla Roberts tallied her third double-double with 14 points and a career-high tying 17 rebounds.
NSU outrebounded FAMU (4-10, 1-1) 54-27 and shot a season-high 44 percent from the floor en route to its largest-ever margin of victory over the Rattlers. It was just NSU's second-ever road win at FAMU and first since the 1999-2000 season. The 18-point margin of victory bested NSU's 17-point win (72-55) in the 2013 MEAC Tournament as the program's most lopsided over FAMU.
FAMU led by as many as eight points (26-18) in the first half after Olivia Antilla's 3-pointer with 5:03 left in the opening stanza. But the Spartans held the Rattlers to just one field goal for the rest of the first half, outscoring FAMU 10-2 over the final five minutes of the period. Corbo hit her only 3-pointer of the game with 25 seconds left before halftime to knot the score at 28-all.
Khaderja Young's two free throws gave FAMU the early second-half lead at 31-30 with 18:49 on the clock. But the Spartans exploded for a 15-2 run over the next eight minutes to take control. Lawrence had the first and last field goals in the run, giving NSU the lead for good at 33-31 and book-ending the spurt with a fast-break layup that made it 45-33 with 11:08 remaining.
Kayla Roberts also had five points in the run, including one of her two 3-pointers on the day.
The closest FAMU got the rest of the way was six, at 51-45, after a Dawn King 3-pointer with 5:18 left to play. But Lawrence and Corbo scored all the points in a 9-0 NSU run that pushed the Spartans' lead to 15. Lawrence punctuated the run with a three-point play, assisted by Corbo, with 2:20 to play. The Spartans coasted to victory from there.
NSU got the job done at both ends of the floor. In addition to shooting a season-best 44 percent from the floor (26-of-59), the Spartans held FAMU to 29 percent shooting (19-of-65) from the floor, worst by a Spartan opponent this year. FAMU shot just 19 percent (7-of-36) in the second half, helping NSU outscore the hosts 40-22 after the break.
NSU got all but seven points from its starting lineup, including 52 from the trio of Lawrence, Corbo and
Kayla Roberts. They combined for 33 of NSU's 40 points in the second half. Sophomore forward
Nia Roberts added six points and six rebounds and senior guard
Jazamine Gray handed out a career-high eight assists. Freshman center
Shayla Tanner chipped in five points, four rebounds and two blocks off the bench.
Taneka Rubin scored 16 points and King had 14 for FAMU.
The Spartans continue their Florida road trip with a 5:30 p.m. game Monday at Bethune-Cookman.
