Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Rae Corbo scored 29 points and Norfolk State's stifling defense helped the Spartans improve to 3-1 in MEAC play with a 53-40 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Monday night at Moore Gymnasium.
NSU is now on a two-game winning streak for the first time this season and has started 3-1 in MEAC competition for the second straight year. The Spartans (4-11) did it thanks to Corbo, who tallied the second-highest scoring output of her career, and a defense which allowed season lows of 40 points and 23.8 percent shooting.
The 40 points B-CU scored are tied for the fewest NSU has ever allowed in a MEAC game. The Wildcats also held the previous low mark from a 67-40 loss to the Spartans on March 2, 2013.
Corbo shot 8-of-19 from the floor and 13-of-14 from the free-throw line. Her 13 made free throws are the fifth-most in a game in school history.
Both teams started slowly on the offensive end. NSU used a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Corbo free throw, to take a 14-11 lead midway through the first period. Kendra Cooper quickly answered with a 3-pointer to tie the game for the Wildcats with 8:30 left in the first half. But the Spartans closed the half on a 10-2 run fueled largely by their defense. NSU forced B-CU into seven turnovers and harassed the Wildcats into 1-of-11 shooting over the final eight and a half minutes of the first half.
That was around the time that Corbo began heating up, as well. She scored nine of NSU's final 11 points of the opening half, which ended with the Spartans on top, 24-16.
B-CU never threatened NSU in the second half. The closest the Wildcats would get was six, 26-20, after a jumper by Kailyn Williams with 18:40 left in the game. But the Spartans held B-CU without a field goal for the next six-plus minutes, and baskets by
Nia Roberts, Corbo and
Ebony Brown doubled NSU's margin to 12 points.
The Spartans led by as many as 14 points en route to their second straight double-figure win.
Corbo scored 18 of her 29 points in the second half, shooting 5-of-10 from the floor and making all eight of her free throws after halftime.
Kayla Roberts added six points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots on the night.
Nia Roberts snared 11 rebounds and
Ebony Brown had a career-high eight off the bench as NSU enjoyed a 51-42 edge on the boards.
NSU held Bethune-Cookman to 15-of-63 shooting, including just 5-of-20 (25 percent) from 3-point range. Cooper was the only Wildcat in double figures, with 12 points on four made 3-point field goals. Williams scored nine points to go with 17 rebounds and 10 blocked shots for B-CU.
Monday's win, coupled with Saturday's win at Florida A&M, gave the Spartans their first road sweep of the MEAC's Florida-based schools since the 1999-2000 season.
The Spartans return home for their next two games, beginning with a 4 p.m. matchup Saturday against North Carolina Central.
