Meet ResultsCHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Norfolk State men's track and field team claimed three first-place finishes on Saturday at the University of North Carolina Open.
Freshman
Xavier Collins (22.80) sprinted to victory in the 200 meters and junior
Steve Coles (49.74) did likewise in the 400 meters to lead the Spartan sprinters. Collins, Coles,
De'Von Booker and
Andre Pickett capped a solid day for the sprinters by crossing the line in second place in the 4x400 meter relay (3:27.94).
Freshman
David Kibet had the Spartans' other victory on Saturday. He won the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:10.64. Teammate
Sammy Kiptoo was third in the same event (16:37.97), while
Desmond Fogg was also strong in the 3,000 meters with an eighth-place finish (9:04.28).
Freshman
Chris Lee had the high finish for the Spartan field performers. He was runner-up in the shot put with a season-best throw of 52 feet, 9.5 inches. That ranks as the second-best throw by a MEAC athlete this year.
In other field events,
Clifton Thompson placed third in the weight throw (45-5.75),
Joseph Boyd took fourth in the high jump (6-2.75) and
Shaw Barfield was fourth in the pole vault (12-5.5).
After taking a week off, the Spartans will compete in a pair of meets on Jan. 30-31, with the squad split between the Penn State National and the Captains Invitational at CNU.
