Game Notes  |  Live Audio

NORFOLK, Va. -
The NSU women's basketball will be seeking to continue its hot play and start 6-1 in MEAC action for the first time in program history when the Spartans play South Carolina State at 4 p.m. Saturday at the SHM Memorial Center in Orangeburg, S.C. The Spartans enter the game on a four-game winning streak, their longest since the 2004-05 season.

Last Time Out: Sophomore guard Koryn Lawrence scored the go-ahead basket on a layup with 14 seconds left in overtime, and North Carolina A&T's Debbie Smith missed a potential winning field goal with seven seconds remaining as the Spartan women's basketball team rallied for a dramatic 76-75 victory over the Aggies on Monday night at Echols Hall.

The Spartans (6-11, 5-1 MEAC) trailed by as many as 19 early in the second half, but rallied to force overtime. NSU trailed by as many as four in the extra session before rallying again behind the play of Corbo, who had a game-high 30 points, and Lawrence, who matched her career high with 23.

Aprill McRae scored inside to give the Aggies (9-10, 2-4) a 75-71 lead with 2:30 left in overtime. But that proved to be N.C. A&T's last field goal. Corbo split six free throws to bring NSU closer. She hit 1-of-2 from the line with 29 seconds left to cut the Aggies' lead to 75-74. A&T guard Christina Carter missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 23 seconds left, and Kayla Roberts rebounded for NSU. Corbo then drove up the right side of the court and found Lawrence streaking behind the defense for a backdoor layup with 14 seconds left.

A&T had a good shot at the end, but Smith missed a jumper in the lane with seven seconds remaining. Roberts rebounded for the Spartans and NSU dribbled out the clock.

Scouting SCSU: The Lady Bulldogs have won two in a row, five-point wins at Delaware State and UMES, on their most recent road trip.  They stand at 10-7 overall and 3-3 in MEAC play this season. Guard Kourtney Williams averages a team-higg 15.2 points per game and teammate Amber Howard chips in with 10.6 per outing. SCSU, which was picked to finish 11th in the MEAC preseason poll, averages a MEAC-best 13.1 steals per game.

All-Time Series vs. SCSU: NSU holds an 18-16 all-time series lead over South Carolina State.  The Spartans won the teams' only meeting last year, 59-54, last year in Orangeburg. That win broke SCSU's three-game win streak in the series.

Quick MEAC Start: NSU is off to a 5-1 MEAC start, its best since the 1999-2000 season. The Spartans have never began a MEAC season 6-1. NSU is also in the midst of a four-game winning streak. The Spartans' last five-game winning streak came during the MEAC championship season of 2001-02.

What a Comeback: The Spartans overcame a 19-point second-half deficit to beat preseason MEAC favorite North Carolina A&T on Monday. The Spartans trailed 43-24 with 17:13 left in regulation before rallying to send the game to overtime, where they rallied from a four-point deficit to win. The last time an NSU team rallied from that large of a deficit to win was on Feb. 18, 2012, when the Spartans trailed by 20 against Delaware State before winning 78-73 in OT.

Offense Lights it Up: The Spartans enjoyed their best night of the year offensively in the 82-58 victory over North Carolina Central last Saturday. The Spartans notched season highs in points (82), field goals (31) and field goal percentage (47.7). That easily beat their previous season best of 71 points (Marshall, Dec. 14).

After a slow start against N.C. A&T, the Spartans scored 49 points and shot 62.5 percent in the second half, their most in a half in any game this year. Their 45.5 percent shooting for the night was their second-best in a game this year.
