NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's basketball team looks for its first 2-0 MEAC start since the 2006-07 season when the Spartans welcome Coppin State to Joseph Echols Hall for a 6 p.m. game Monday.
The CSU game – and all of NSU's remaining games beginning Monday – will be broadcast on WNSB Hot 91.1 FM.
Both teams will attempt to snap losing streaks on Monday. The Spartans (2-10 overall, 1-0 MEAC) have lost five in a row since their 68-63 win over Morgan State in their MEAC opener on Dec. 6. The Eagles (1-10, 0-0), who are playing their conference-opener Monday, have dropped six in a row since a 68-54 victory over Division II Virginia Union on Nov. 29.
Last Time Out: USC Upstate outscored NSU 23-7 over the final 8:54 of the game to turn a four-point deficit into a 70-58 win on Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C.
Amber Brown gave NSU a 51-47 lead with 8:54 left after she went 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. But NSU had seven turnovers and missed eight of its final nine shots over the last eight and a half minutes to lose its fifth in a row.
Rae Corbo had a game-high 22 points for NSU, hitting 5-of-11 from the floor and 11-of-14 from the charity stripe.
Koryn Lawrence had a perfect shooting game, hitting all four of her field goals and all six of her free throws for a season-high 14 points. The Spartans, though, shot 35.6 percent from the floor as a team and had 24 turnovers.
Scouting the Eagles: CSU dropped to 1-10 on the year and 0-10 against Division I competition with a 63-52 setback against VCU on Dec. 28 in Baltimore. The Eagles were led by junior guard Janelle Lane's 17 points.Â
In addition to its loss to VCU, CSU has also dropped a combined six games against teams from the ACC, SEC, Big 12 and Big 10. CSU returns seven letterwinners from last year's team that won 17 games and advanced to the MEAC Tournament championship game. The Eagles were picked to finish fourth in the preseason MEAC poll of head coaches and sports information directors.
Series History against CSU: Coppin State is one team NSU has struggled against in recent years. The Eagles own a 23-6 all-time series advantage against the Spartans and have won 17 straight against NSU. The Spartans' last win in the series was a 65-57 triumph at Echols Hall on Jan. 31, 2005.
Up Next: Monday's game against Coppin State begins the remainder of the Spartans' MEAC slate. The contest at USC Upstate was NSU's last non-conference game of the year, as the Spartans' last 15 regular-season games are against MEAC foes. NSU hits the road this weekend for a trip through Florida. The Spartans face Florida A&M on Saturday in Tallahassee and travel to Daytona Beach to play Bethune-Cookman next Monday.
